Chapter 10 - THE CUSTODY HEARING

The Federal Family Court of Chicago was not a place of justice; it was a theater of war.

Two weeks after the ambush at the gates, Julian Thorne’s high-priced legal team successfully forced an emergency evidentiary hearing before Judge Arthur Sterling.

The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate spies, and socialites eager to witness the potential downfall of the untouchable Gideon Vance.

Gideon sat at the defense table, wearing an immaculate, terrifyingly sharp charcoal suit. His face was carved from granite. He had refused to bring Sage into this toxic environment, leaving her safely at Ashcombe under Owen’s protection.

At the plaintiff’s table, Julian Thorne sat wearing an expression of practiced, tragic grief.

"Your Honor," Julian’s lead attorney, a slick man named Marcus Vance (no relation to Gideon), paced before the judge's bench. "We are here today to rectify a profound tragedy. Eight years ago, my client’s sister, Elise, suffered a severe psychotic break. She kidnapped her own daughter and fled into poverty. When she tragically succumbed to cancer, Gideon Vance—a man with no biological ties and a documented history of ruthless, predatory behavior—illegally bypassed standard state foster protocols to claim the child as his own."

The attorney pointed dramatically at Gideon.

"Mr. Vance’s adoption was expedited through bribery and corporate influence! He is a bachelor billionaire who uses this traumatized child as a public relations prop to soften his image! We demand immediate temporary custody be granted to her true, biological family in Europe."

The gallery murmured. It was a vicious, beautifully orchestrated smear campaign.

Judge Sterling peered over his glasses at Gideon. "Mr. Vance. These are severe allegations regarding the circumvention of child welfare laws. How does your counsel respond?"

Nora Whitman stood up calmly, adjusting her blazer.

"We respond, Your Honor, by pointing out that Mr. Thorne's sudden onset of familial devotion is exceptionally well-timed with a four-hundred-million-dollar inheritance payout in Geneva."

Nora slammed a thick binder onto the judge’s desk.

"Mr. Vance did not bypass the law; he saved a child from the very system that failed her mother. He has provided a stable, loving, and extensively documented home. Furthermore, we have evidence that Mr. Thorne hired private investigators to track Elise six years ago, found her living in a homeless shelter, and explicitly ordered his operatives to abandon her to avoid paying her medical debts."

Julian Thorne leaped to his feet, his aristocratic mask slipping for a fraction of a second. "That is a fabrication! A lie manufactured by a desperate man!"

"Order!" Judge Sterling slammed his gavel. "Counsel, approach the bench."

For the next four hours, the courtroom devolved into a brutal legal bloodbath. Julian’s team attacked Gideon’s long work hours, his corporate enemies, and the security threats surrounding Ashcombe Manor. They painted the estate not as a sanctuary, but as a dangerous, isolated prison for a child.

"If Mr. Vance is such a fit parent," Thorne’s lawyer sneered during closing arguments, "why does the child still keep her belongings packed in a suitcase under her bed? We have the testimony of a former maid who witnessed the girl refusing to unpack. She is living in fear, waiting for the day this billionaire throws her out onto the street!"

Gideon’s fists clenched so tightly under the table that his knuckles turned white. They were weaponizing Sage’s trauma. They were using her coping mechanisms as ammunition.

Judge Sterling sighed heavily, rubbing his temples.

"The evidence regarding the adoption's expedited nature is... troubling," the judge ruled slowly. "However, the child’s current stability cannot be ignored. I am issuing a temporary stay on the custody transfer. But I am ordering an immediate, independent psychological evaluation of the child by a court-appointed warden. If the child exhibits signs of coercion or distress, I will revoke Mr. Vance’s custody rights permanently."

The gavel slammed down.

Julian Thorne turned to look at Gideon across the aisle. The European aristocrat smiled—a cold, victorious smirk.

He had wedged the door open.
