Chapter 16 - THE ANCHOR

The winter storm had passed by the time they returned to Ashcombe Manor, leaving the sprawling estate blanketed in pristine, glittering white snow.

The house was quiet. Warm light spilled from the windows, cutting through the freezing evening air. Owen Faust stood by the front doors, offering a rare, genuine smile as Gideon carried Sage inside on his shoulders.

Later that night, the fire crackled cheerfully in Sage’s bedroom.

Gideon walked in to check on her before bed. He expected to find her asleep, but instead, he found her sitting on the plush rug near her closet.

The gray suitcase was lying open on the floor.

But for the first time since she had arrived at the manor a year and a half ago, Sage was not putting things into it. She was taking them out.

Gideon stood silently in the doorway, watching as Sage carefully lifted the stacks of her mother's letters and placed them lovingly into a beautiful, velvet-lined cedar keepsake box Gideon had bought for her months ago. She took her old, faded sweaters and folded them neatly into the bottom drawer of her massive mahogany dresser.

She was unpacking.

Gideon felt a profound, overwhelming lump rise in his throat. He walked over and sat down on the rug beside her, watching as she emptied the very last item from the suitcase—the red wax seal from the letter that had saved them.

"You're emptying it," Gideon said softly, his voice thick with emotion.

Sage nodded. She closed the lid of the beautiful cedar box, running her fingers over the smooth wood.

"Mommy said in her letter that I wasn't allowed to open it until the monsters came back," Sage whispered, looking up at Gideon with bright, peaceful hazel eyes. "But the monsters came, and you chased them away. Forever. So I don't need to keep my things ready to run anymore."

She pushed the empty, battered gray suitcase away, letting it slide deep under the bed, out of sight.

Then, Sage crawled into Gideon’s lap, wrapping her small arms securely around his neck, burying her face against his chest.

"I remember where I came from, Dad," Sage whispered, the word Dad falling from her lips so naturally, so perfectly, that it healed every broken piece of Gideon’s soul. "But I finally know where I'm staying."

Gideon wrapped his massive arms around his daughter, holding her fiercely, protectively against his heart. Outside the thick, iron-clad walls of Ashcombe Manor, the world would always be full of storms, corporate battles, and shadows.

But inside this room, bathed in the warm light of the fire, the war was permanently over.

Gideon Vance closed his eyes, resting his chin against his daughter's dark hair, knowing with absolute certainty that he had finally built the one thing his billions could never buy: a home that would never, ever be broken.
