Chapter 7 - THE DARK HALLWAY

Daniel pushed a chair beneath the door handle.
Marcus called hospital security.
I stood beside Sophie’s bed with my heart pounding.
The handle moved again.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Then a man’s voice came through the door.
“Maintenance.”
Daniel looked at the dark ceiling.
“There was no scheduled maintenance.”
The man knocked harder.
“We need to inspect the electrical panel.”
The hospital security team arrived from the stairwell.
The person outside ran.
Footsteps disappeared down the corridor.
Officers searched the floor.
They found a maintenance uniform abandoned inside a supply closet.
The hospital badge attached to it was fake.
Security footage showed a man entering through the parking garage.
He wore a baseball cap and kept his face turned away from the cameras.
He never reached Sophie’s room.
But he left something behind.
A large envelope sat outside the emergency stairwell.
Inside were photographs of me taken over the previous month.
Leaving Sophie’s school.
Shopping at a grocery store.
Meeting Marcus at his office.
Someone had been following us before the wedding.
Detective Brooks examined every photograph.
“This was planned for longer than we thought.”
One image showed me entering my grandmother’s former house.
I had gone there to collect family photographs.
Nothing more.
On the back of that picture, someone had written:
She knows where Eleanor hid the ledger.
Marcus read the message twice.
“The vault attempt was not about the trust documents.”
“What ledger?”
“Your grandmother maintained a handwritten record of every suspicious transfer she discovered.”
“Where is it?”
“She never told me.”
Detective Brooks looked at the photographs again.
“Your family believes you have it.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t.”
Sophie had been listening quietly.
Then she spoke.
“Grandma Eleanor gave me a key.”
Every adult in the room turned toward her.
“When?” I asked.
“Before she got sick.”
Sophie touched the white ribbon tied around her stuffed rabbit’s neck.
“She said it opened something important.”
I carefully untied the ribbon.
A tiny brass key was sewn into the fabric.
Marcus inhaled sharply.
“I know that symbol.”
A small lighthouse was engraved on the key.
Grandmother’s lakefront house had a stone lighthouse at the end of its private dock.
Detective Brooks ordered officers sent to the property.
But before they arrived, smoke was reported near the shoreline.

Someone had reached the house first.
And the building containing Grandmother’s secrets was already burning.
