Chapter 12 - THE WITNESS WHO CAME FORWARD

Canadian police found Nathan’s abandoned car near an industrial district.
There was blood on the steering wheel.
There was no body.
For twelve hours, we heard nothing.
Then a hospital in British Columbia reported an unidentified man admitted after being found near railroad tracks.
Nathan was alive.
He had escaped through the passenger door after the collision.
A passing freight worker found him unconscious.
His injuries were serious, but he was expected to recover.
The black SUV had been rented using Grant Keller’s company card.
Grant was now wanted in both countries.
Preston denied involvement.
His lawyer called the accusation ridiculous.
Then a nineteen-year-old hotel server named Marisol Vega contacted Detective Brooks.
Marisol had worked Preston’s wedding.
She had seen my mother hand the jacket to Preston.
She had also heard them speaking near the kitchen.
Marisol recorded part of the conversation because she believed they were planning to blame a catering employee.
On the audio, my mother’s voice was unmistakable.
“Put it deep enough that Evelyn cannot claim it fell inside.”
Preston replied.
“Once everyone sees the phone, she’ll sign.”
“And if she refuses?”
“Then we use the other accusations.”
My mother lowered her voice.
“What about the child?”
“She’ll cry.”
“They always do.”
The recording continued.
Camille entered the hallway.
She asked whether Preston was certain.
He answered with chilling confidence.
“My sister has spent her whole life surrendering.”
“She will surrender again.”
Marisol had remained silent because Henry Whitmore’s security manager threatened to blacklist her from every major hotel in Chicago.
When she saw photographs of Sophie’s injury online, she changed her mind.
“I have a little sister the same age,” she said.
“I couldn’t sleep.”
Her testimony gave prosecutors evidence of conspiracy.
My mother was arrested that evening.
She did not cry when officers placed her in handcuffs.
She looked directly at me.
“You have no idea what it takes to hold a family together.”
I answered without raising my voice.
“You never held us together.”
“You held me down.”
As she was led away, Detective Brooks received another call.
Grant Keller’s SUV had been found near O’Hare Airport.

Inside the trunk was Sophie’s school photograph.
And beneath it was a note containing tomorrow’s dismissal time.
