Chapter 13 - THE SCHOOL GATE

Sophie remained home from school.

Police officers waited outside my apartment.

Daniel installed additional cameras.

Marcus obtained an emergency protection order against Preston, my parents, Camille, and Grant.

I told Sophie only what she needed to know.

Some adults had made dangerous choices.

The police were helping us.

She was safe.

She looked at me with eyes too old for an eight-year-old.

“Did Grandma ever love me?”

I sat beside her.

“She loved what you gave her.”

“What did I give her?”

“The chance to feel like a good grandmother.”

Sophie thought about that.

“But she didn’t protect me.”

“No.”

“Then she loved how I made her feel.”

I swallowed hard.

“Yes.”

Children often understood cruelty more clearly than adults.

That afternoon, an officer stationed near Sophie’s school noticed a man watching the exit from a parked van.

The officer approached.

The van sped away.

A camera captured part of the license plate.

It belonged to a company controlled by Henry Whitmore.

Henry claimed the vehicle had been stolen.

The driver was identified two hours later.

Grant Keller.

Police chased him across the South Side.

He crashed near an abandoned warehouse and fled on foot.

Inside the van, officers found rope, sedatives, and printed directions to my apartment.

They also found a second phone.

Messages connected Grant directly to Preston.

Take the girl somewhere Evelyn will cooperate.

No permanent damage.

We only need the trust signature.

The words made me physically ill.

Preston had already struck Sophie.

Now he was willing to abduct her.

Detective Brooks returned to arrest him on additional charges.

His apartment was empty.

His passport was gone.

Camille had disappeared too.

Airport records showed no commercial flight.

Henry Whitmore owned a private aircraft.

Its flight plan listed Mexico City as the destination.

Federal officers rushed to the private terminal.

The plane remained on the runway.

The pilot was missing.

Inside the cabin, investigators found Camille’s luggage.

Preston’s passport was on a seat.

But Preston and Camille were nowhere inside.

Then a maintenance worker reported seeing a bride in a white coat enter an underground service tunnel.

She was accompanied by a man carrying a gun.

The tunnel led beneath the runway.

And directly toward an active cargo terminal.
