Chapter 8 - THE BROTHER WHO CALLED IT A PLAN.Scott asked to speak with Daniel.

Daniel nearly refused.

Then decided he wanted one answer.

Why?

They met through interview-room glass.

Scott looked smaller in custody.

Not remorseful.

Just reduced.

“You’ve seen the drive,” he said.

“Yes.”

“Then you know this wasn’t supposed to hurt Emily.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Say that again.”

Scott hesitated.

“The structure was financial.”

“You helped a woman abuse my daughter to manufacture evidence.”

“I never told Rebecca to hit her.”

Daniel’s voice stayed calm.

“You told her to document separation anxiety.”

“Yes.”

“You told her what psychiatric language mattered.”

“Yes.”

“You helped hide school calls.”

Scott looked away.

“Rebecca handled that.”

“You built the plan.”

“I built contingencies.”

Daniel laughed once.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The word cowards use when they want a plan to sound accidental.”

Scott’s jaw tightened.

“Claire’s trust structure was inefficient.”

Daniel stared.

“My wife was dying.”

“She still made emotional financial decisions.”

“She protected her daughter from people like you.”

Scott flinched.

Then recovered.

“You think this is about greed.”

“What is it about?”

“Control.”

At least he said it.

“Dad always treated you like the responsible one,” Scott continued. “Claire treated me like some parasite whenever I gave advice. Then she locked assets away in structures that made me irrelevant.”

Daniel looked at his brother with disbelief.

“You hurt Emily because Claire didn’t respect you.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Scott leaned forward.

“I never wanted the child hurt.”

“You were willing to make everyone believe she was mentally ill.”

“To unlock the trust structure.”

“She is seven.”

“She would have received treatment.”

“For a condition she didn’t have.”

Scott said nothing.

That silence answered everything.

Daniel stood.

Scott spoke quickly.

“Rebecca went too far.”

Daniel stopped.

“Too far?”

“She started taking it personally.”

“She always took it personally.”

“No. At first she only wanted records.”

Daniel turned back.

Scott continued.

“She’d provoke tantrums. Record crying. Build a pattern. Then she started talking about Claire.”

Daniel felt cold.

“What about Claire?”

“She said Emily used Claire like a weapon.”

“She was remembering her mother.”

“I know.”

“Did you?”

Scott looked down.

“I should have stopped it.”

“When?”

No answer.

“The first locked room?”

Silence.

“The first bruise?”

Nothing.

“The first time she asked how to make an accusation look like a symptom?”

Scott closed his eyes.

Daniel stepped closer to the glass.

“You don’t get to regret the ending and call that morality.”

Scott whispered:

“I know.”

Daniel did not believe him.

Before leaving, he asked one final question.

“Was anyone else involved?”

Scott shook his head.

“Financially? No.”

“Family?”

A pause.

Daniel saw it.

“Who?”

Scott looked away.

“Mom knew some of it.”

Daniel froze.

Their mother.

Margaret Hayes.

Seventy.

Widowed.

Retired.

The person who watched Emily twice a month and always told Daniel how “patient” Rebecca was.

“How much?”

Scott rubbed his face.

“She knew we were considering residential care.”

“Did she know why?”

“She believed Emily had problems.”

“Because you told her.”

“Yes.”

“Did she know Rebecca hit her?”

“No.”

“Locked her up?”

Scott hesitated.

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“She knew.”

“Not exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

“She knew Rebecca used the basement room for consequences.”

Daniel felt something final break.

Not the mastermind.

Not another conspiracy.

Something more ordinary and more painful.

His mother had seen enough to ask questions.

And chose not to.
