Chapter 4 - THE UNCLE WHO WROTE THE PAPERS.Scott arrived at the station offended.

Not frightened.

Offended.

“You dragged me out of a client meeting.”

Daniel stood across from him.

“My daughter was locked in a basement.”

Scott’s expression softened.

“I heard. I’m sorry.”

“Did Rebecca ask you to change my estate plan?”

Scott hesitated.

“Not exactly.”

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?”

“You asked me to modernize it after you remarried.”

“Yes.”

“I included standard language.”

Rachel Stone sat beside Daniel.

“It was not standard.”

Scott glanced at her.

“And you are?”

“The attorney who drafted Claire’s original trust.”

That changed him.

Small shift.

But there.

Rachel opened the amended estate plan.

“You created enhanced-care discretion that did not exist in Claire’s trust.”

Scott replied:

“I created flexibility.”

“For whom?”

“For the child.”

“No. For whoever controls the guardian expenses.”

Scott leaned back.

“This is ridiculous.”

Daniel’s voice stayed flat.

“Did Rebecca ask what would happen if Emily were diagnosed with a behavioral disorder?”

Silence.

Scott looked toward the observation window.

Daniel saw it.

“She did.”

Scott exhaled.

“She asked hypothetical questions.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“How many?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Try.”

Scott rubbed his forehead.

“Three or four conversations.”

Rachel asked:

“Did she specifically ask whether treatment could be paid from Emily’s trust?”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at his brother.

“And you never told me.”

“Why would I? She was your wife.”

Daniel almost laughed.

The sentence had become poison.

Everyone trusted Rebecca because Daniel married her.

Daniel trusted information because family delivered it.

Scott continued:

“She said Emily was getting worse.”

“She wasn’t.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“You never asked me.”

Scott looked irritated.

“You work sixty-hour weeks. You think everyone needs permission to discuss household planning with you?”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“My daughter is not household planning.”

Silence.

Rachel turned another page.

“There’s something else.”

Scott stopped.

“This document adds you as emergency financial co-trustee if Daniel is suspended from duty following criminal or administrative investigation.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Rachel looked at him.

“If your job were compromised, Scott could temporarily share control of Emily’s trust.”

Daniel stared at his brother.

Scott lifted both hands.

“That was Dad’s old structure.”

“Dad is dead.”

“I retained continuity.”

Daniel’s mind shifted.

Rebecca needed Emily labeled unstable.

Scott gained financial authority if Daniel became professionally compromised.

Two conditions.

Two potential sources of control.

Was this collaboration?

Or coincidence?

Then Mark entered carrying a forensic report.

“We found something on Rebecca’s laptop.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“A folder labeled ‘D.H. Incidents.’”

His initials.

Inside were photographs of Daniel’s service weapon stored at home.

Screenshots of heated text arguments.

Copies of internal complaint forms available only to police-family contacts.

Draft statements describing him as aggressive and unstable under work stress.

Daniel stared.

Mark continued:

“And one video.”

They played it.

Daniel stood in his kitchen six months earlier, arguing with Rebecca.

He remembered the night.

He had come home after a child-fatality call and was emotionally wrecked.

Rebecca kept pushing him to talk.

He snapped.

Hit the counter with his palm.

Left the room.

The clip ended there.

But the full home-security archive, recovered separately, showed what happened before.

Rebecca followed him from room to room.

Blocked the door.

Kept provoking.

Then positioned herself near the hidden camera before continuing.

Manufactured evidence.

Again.

Daniel slowly looked at Scott.

“Did Rebecca ever ask what would happen if I were investigated for domestic violence?”

Scott went silent.

Rachel looked at him.

Mark looked at him.

Daniel did not blink.

Finally Scott whispered:

“Yes.”

That was when Daniel understood the plan had two targets.

May you like

Not only Emily.

Him too.
