Chapter 7 - THE PLACE THEY PLANNED TO SEND HER.Brightwood Children’s Center looked peaceful.

That made Daniel hate it immediately.
White buildings.
Trees.
Gardens.
A playground behind decorative fencing.
Nothing inherently wrong with the facility.
The problem was why Rebecca and Scott had chosen it.
Daniel arrived with Mark and Rachel.
The administrator, Dr. Helen Ward, agreed to speak.
“Yes,” she said after reviewing the name. “We received preliminary inquiries regarding Emily Hayes.”
Daniel stared.
“From whom?”
“Rebecca Hayes and Scott Hayes.”
“When?”
“Approximately five weeks ago.”
“What did they say?”
“That the child had escalating aggression, delusions involving abuse, severe attachment problems, and potentially dangerous false accusations against caregivers.”
Daniel looked away for a second.
They had planned the defense before the accusation.
“Did you meet Emily?”
“No.”
“Did you speak with me?”
“No.”
“Then why was anything being arranged?”
“It wasn’t formally. We explained parental consent and independent assessment would be required.”
Dr. Ward opened the correspondence.
“Actually, we had concerns.”
She showed him an email from Scott.
Would short-term emergency admission be possible if father were temporarily unavailable due to departmental investigation?
Another from Rebecca:
Child may accuse me of physical discipline. Please note these allegations are part of her current fixation.
Daniel felt sick.
Dr. Ward looked at him.
“We never accepted that framing as fact.”
“Did they pay anything?”
“A refundable reservation deposit.”
“From what account?”
Rachel checked.
Emily’s education trust.
Unauthorized.
Scott had initiated it as “therapeutic consultation.”
Everything came back to the child’s own money financing attempts to remove her.
Mark asked:
“Did Scott visit here recently?”
Dr. Ward nodded.
“Yesterday.”
Daniel’s head lifted.
“Why?”
“He asked whether historical intake correspondence could be deleted because the family was changing providers.”
“Did you delete it?”
“No.”
Good.
Scott had been cleaning evidence.
He was running.
But not blindly.
He still believed certain records could save him.
Police issued warrants.
Rebecca was arrested that evening at a hotel near the state line.
She had cash.
A passport.
The stolen trust folder from Lauren’s house.
No Emily.
That mattered.
She had fled for herself.
Scott remained missing.
Daniel brought Emily to the station only once more for a structured child interview.
The specialist asked:
“Did Rebecca ever tell you why she punished you?”
Emily thought.
“She said I ruin things.”
“What things?”
“Her life.”
Daniel watched through glass.
The specialist continued.
“Did she say how?”
Emily nodded.
“She said Dad would love her better if I stopped making trouble.”
“What trouble?”
“Talking about Mom.”
Another pause.
“She made me put Mom’s pictures in a box.”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“Where is the box now?” the specialist asked.
“Garage.”
Police found it that night.
Claire’s photographs.
Letters.
Jewelry.
Emily’s baby books.
Mother’s Day cards.
Everything connected to Claire had been removed gradually and hidden in a storage cabinet.
Rebecca had been erasing emotional memory at the same time Scott helped her attack legal memory.
Daniel sat on the garage floor holding one of Claire’s letters.
Written to Emily before her death.
You never have to compete with anyone for your father’s love. Love isn’t a chair someone else can take.
Daniel cried then.
For the first time since the investigation began.
Quietly.
Because Rebecca had spent months teaching Emily the opposite.
That she occupied space.
That she caused conflict.
That love became safer when she disappeared.
Mark found him there.
“We got Scott.”
Daniel wiped his face.
“Where?”
“Airport.”
“Trying to leave?”
“Yes.”
“With what?”
Mark hesitated.
“A drive.”
Daniel stood.
“What’s on it?”
“We don’t know yet.”
By morning they did.
Financial records.
Draft guardianship filings.
Edited home videos.
School reports.
And one folder labeled:
FINAL SEQUENCE
Inside was a step-by-step timeline.
Not murder.
Not physical destruction.
Something colder.
1. Behavioral incident.
2. Police domestic complaint involving Daniel.
3. Administrative leave.
4. Emergency psychiatric evaluation of Emily.
5. Temporary trustee activation.
6. Residential admission.
7. House restructuring.
Daniel read it twice.
Then one final line:
Rebecca must keep control until placement.
He understood.
The abuse was not accidental around the scheme.
It was preparation for the behavioral incident they needed.

Rebecca had been pushing Emily until eventually she exploded.
Then they would call the explosion proof.
