Chapter 19 - THE FACE IN THE MIRROR

The lantern room was surrounded by sweeping panels of reinforced glass, offering a panoramic view of the raging Atlantic Ocean below. In the center of the room, illuminated by the harsh glow of an industrial work light, sat a wooden chair.

Lily was tied to it with nylon cord, her mouth covered with silver duct tape. Her eyes were swollen from crying, but when she saw Daniel emerge from the hatch, a muffled scream tore through the tape, her little body thrashing against the ropes.

"Shh, my sweet girl," a woman’s voice purred from the shadows behind the towering Fresnel lens. "Your father is here. Just as he promised. Always the hero, isn't he?"

The woman stepped into the light.

Daniel’s finger hovered over the trigger, but his brain refused to process the image in front of him.

She wore an ivory trench coat, soaked at the shoulders. Her dark hair was cut into a sleek bob. Her face was an exact, flawless mirror of Victoria Vance—except her eyes were not Victoria’s cold, lifeless hazel.

They were violet.

Claire’s eyes.

"Drop the gun, Daniel," the woman said, her voice a chilling blend of Victoria’s cadence and Claire’s soft timbre. "Or the detonator in my hand triggers the charges beneath your daughter’s chair. And trust me, eighty feet onto the rocks will ensure nobody ever finds what's left of her."

She held up a small black transmitter. A red LED blinked steadily.

Daniel slowly lowered his weapon, placing it on the iron grating of the floor and kicking it away. It skittered into the shadows.

"Who are you?" Daniel choked out, his eyes darting between Lily’s terrified face and the monster standing before him. "Victoria is dead. Claire died five years ago."

The woman laughed—a low, musical sound that sent ice water through Daniel’s veins.

"Victoria was an amateur," she sneered, pacing around Lily’s chair, her manicured fingers grazing the little girl’s trembling shoulders. "She let her emotions get in the way. She actually started to hate this little brat. She got sloppy, left cameras, got herself caught like a common thief."

"You're the third sister," Daniel realized with mounting horror. "The triplets."

"Triplet? Oh, Daniel. You really are blissfully ignorant," the woman smiled, tilting her head. "There were never three sisters. There was only ever Claire. And Victoria. The two halves of the Sterling bloodline."

She reached up to her neck and slowly peeled away a strip of flesh-toned medical latex beneath her jaw, revealing a deep, ugly surgical track that ran down into her collarbone.

"Claire was the weak one," the woman whispered, leaning closer. "The one who married you to appease our grandfather. But when the family empire went bankrupt, when your precious investments failed, Claire couldn't handle the truth. So she came to me. Her twin sister. The one grandfather locked away in Europe."

"You killed Claire," Daniel said, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "Five years ago. In the Hudson."

"Claire begged me to take her place, Daniel!" the woman shouted over the roar of the storm, her composure cracking into pure, unhinged venom. "She wanted to disappear! She was weak, frail, and useless! But then she had this child. A child carrying the pure, unbroken Sterling trust fund. Victoria and I spent five years orchestrating the reclamation of our family’s wealth. Victoria was supposed to train the girl, break her defiance, mold her into an obedient puppet so we could claim the trust on her eighteenth birthday!"

She grabbed Lily’s hair, yanking her head back. Lily sobbed violently through the tape.

"Take your hands off her!" Daniel roared, taking a step forward.

"One more step and I press this button!" the woman shrieked, her thumb hovering over the red switch. "Victoria failed because she had a weak heart. Literally. The prison poison was a mercy. But I don't fail, Daniel. I am the true architect. And now, the story ends cleanly. A tragic murder-suicide. The broken father, unable to cope with Victoria’s legacy, murders his daughter at the lighthouse and jumps into the sea."
