Chapter 15 - THE CELLAR OF SECRETS

Leaving Lily under the armed guard of two elite tactical marshals at Falcon’s Perch, Daniel and Miller took an unmarked helicopter north toward the Hudson Valley.

The fog had thickened into a heavy, suffocating rain that lashed against the windshield of their rented SUV as they navigated a forgotten logging road deep in the woods. Overgrown pine branches scraped against the doors like clawing fingers.

At the end of the road stood the boathouse.

It was a rotting, gothic structure built over the black, churning waters of the Hudson River. Half the roof had caved in, choked by wild ivy and moss, but the front door was solid iron-banded oak.

Daniel approached with his gun drawn, Miller flanking him with an MP5 submachine gun.

Daniel inserted the antique brass key into the rusted lock. With a heavy, metallic groan, the tumblers clicked. The door swung open into pitch darkness.

The air inside smelled of stagnant river water, damp rot, and something else—industrial-grade ozone, like high-powered electronics running in a cold cellar.

"Police! Nobody move!" Miller shouted, sweeping his tactical flashlight across the cavernous room.

The ground floor was empty: decaying nautical gear, rotting wooden hulls, and shattered glass. But in the center of the wooden floorboards, a heavy steel hatch stood slightly ajar.

A faint blue light pulsed from the depths below.

Daniel led the way down a steep flight of concrete stairs. The temperature plummeted with every step. When their boots hit the bottom floor, both men stopped dead in their tracks.

This wasn't an abandoned cellar. It was a high-tech surveillance bunker.

Wall-to-wall monitors hummed quietly, displaying live feeds. But these weren't feeds of the boathouse or the river.

Daniel felt the air violently leave his lungs.

Monitor 1 showed Lily’s elementary school playground.

Monitor 2 showed the kitchen of the Westchester estate.

Monitor 3 showed the master bedroom closet.

And Monitor 4—flashing with a red 'LIVE' icon—showed the living room at Falcon’s Perch. Lily was sleeping on the couch. The two marshals were standing by the door.

"Miller..." Daniel gasped, his throat closing up. "They're watching them right now!"

"Daniel, look at the table," Miller whispered, his weapon trembling slightly.

In the center of the metal workstation sat an open medical dossier. Daniel rushed forward and flipped through the pages.

They were hospital records from an elite, off-the-grid private psychiatric clinic in Geneva, Switzerland. The patient name was Claire Sterling. The date of admission was *two weeks after her official funeral.*

Attached to the dossier was a high-resolution color photograph taken less than forty-eight hours ago.

It showed a hospital room. Sitting in a wheelchair, staring blankly out at the Swiss Alps with empty, dead eyes, was Claire.

And standing behind her, resting two gloved hands on her shoulders, was a woman whose face was identical to Victoria’s—except for the cold, calculating smile of a predator who had just finished setting her master trap.

A sticky note was attached to Claire’s photograph. The handwriting belonged to Victoria Vance:

*She was never your wife, Daniel. She was my sister. And Lily belongs to us.*
