Chapter 16 - THE SHADOW IN THE SAFE HOUSE

"Get the extraction team on the radio!" Daniel screamed, lunging for Miller’s tactical radio. "They know where Lily is! They're in Falcon’s Perch!"
Miller grabbed his radio, switching to the secure frequency. "Eagle Base, this is Miller! Code Red! Immediate breach warning! Protect the asset! Do you copy?!"
The radio responded with nothing but rhythmic, crackling static.
Then, through the speaker, came the sound of two distinct, muffled gunshots.
*Pfft. Pfft.* Silenced caliber rounds.
Then silence.
"Lily!" Daniel roared, sprinting toward the stairs. "LILY!"
"Daniel, wait! It’s a setup!" Miller yelled, chasing him up the concrete steps into the storm.
They didn't wait for the helicopter. Daniel commandeered the SUV, flooring the accelerator through the mud and blinding rain, his tires spinning wildly as they fishtailed onto the paved highway. The drive to the coastal launch point was forty agonizing minutes. Every second felt like a drop of molten lead pouring onto Daniel’s heart.
The images flashed through his mind in a sickening montage. Victoria’s cold discipline. The locked doors. The way she had isolated Lily, slowly breaking her will on the tennis court, demanding perfection, demanding absolute submission.
*She was never your wife. She was my sister.*
It all made horrific sense now. The uncanny similarities between Claire and Victoria that he had foolishly attributed to coincidence. The way Victoria had arrived at his door with an immaculate resume just months after Claire’s drowning. It wasn't a tragedy followed by a bad marriage—it was a long, meticulous, generational abduction orchestrated from the very beginning. Lily wasn't just a child to them; she was the sole legal heir to the Sterling shipping dynasty, an empire worth hundreds of millions of dollars that Daniel’s family had merged with.
By the time they reached the marina, the storm had turned the Sound into a violent sea of black waves.
Miller hijacked a high-speed police interceptor boat, slamming the twin throttle levers forward. The vessel launched across the white-capped swell, crashing down with bone-jarring impacts as salt spray blinded their vision.
Ten minutes later, the silhouette of Falcon’s Perch loomed out of the darkness like a shattered tooth.
The island was dark. The exterior floodlights were dead.

The front reinforced doors of the fortress hung wide open, swinging violently in the gale-force wind.
