Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

The fallout from the Rossi betrayal shook the city of New York to its core.
Within forty-eight hours, federal indictments rained down on the corrupt factions of the police department, the Luciano family’s upper echelon was dismantled by the FBI, and the remnants of the Rossi syndicate collapsed overnight. Rico Moretti had played the system masterfully—using legal authorities to crush his enemies while keeping his own hands clean in the eyes of the public.
At the Alpine estate, the repair crews had already restored the limestone and marble, erasing every trace of the violence.
Yet, for Clara, a different storm was brewing.
It was midnight on Sunday. Clara had just put Leo to bed after reading him three stories. She walked into the private study, where Rico sat behind a massive mahogany desk, reviewing shipping manifests.
A single amber lamp illuminated his sharp features. He looked exhausted, but for the first time in months, the haunted darkness in his eyes had been replaced by a quiet, steady resolve.
“You wanted to see me, Mr. Moretti?” Clara asked, standing by the leather armchairs.
Rico looked up, closing his laptop. He pointed to the chair opposite him. “Sit, Clara. And stop calling me Mr. Moretti. You’ve earned the right to use my name.”
Clara sat down, smoothing her jeans. She felt an unsettling tension in the pit of her stomach. The contract was technically fulfilled. The danger had passed. The traitors were in federal custody. Leo was speaking, laughing, and sleeping through the night without terror.
Her job was finished.
Rico slid a thick leather folder across the desk toward her.
Clara opened it. Inside were property deeds, a trust fund document in her name worth five million dollars, and full paid tuition papers for her brother Evan at the finest private academy and medical facility in Boston.
Clara stared at the documents, her vision blurring with tears. “Rico... what is this?”
“It’s your compensation,” Rico said softly. “You saved my son’s life. You brought him back from the dark. You gave me back my family, and you stopped me from becoming a monster. There is no amount of money in the world that can repay that debt.”
Clara swallowed the lump in her throat. “So... this is goodbye?”
The question hung in the quiet study like a blade suspended by a thread.
Rico stood up. He walked around the mahogany desk and leaned against the edge, looking down at her with an intensity that took her breath away.
“That depends on you, Clara,” Rico murmured, his voice dropping into that deep, magnetic register.
“What do you mean?”
“Your contract is fulfilled. You are a free woman. You can take this money, take your brother, move to Boston, and never see another gun, another bodyguard, or another headline about the Moretti family again. You can have a peaceful, normal life.”
Clara looked down at the five-million-dollar trust fund. It was everything she had ever dreamed of. Security. Freedom. Safety.
“And what’s the other option?” she whispered, looking back up into his smoldering dark eyes.
Rico reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently lifting her chin, forcing her to hold his gaze.
“The other option,” Rico said, his thumb stroking across her lower lip, “is that you stay. Not as a governess. Not as an employee on a payroll.”
Clara’s heart stopped. “Rico...”
“Leo loves you,” Rico murmured, stepping closer, his presence filling her entire world. “And I... I have spent six months dead inside, Clara. The night you walked across that dining room with four ounces of warm milk, you didn't just save my son. You woke me up. I cannot look at this house without seeing you in it. I cannot imagine raising my boy without you by my side.”
He leaned down, his breath warm against her cheek. “Stay with me, Clara. Let me give you the world. Let me protect you. Let me love you.”
Clara’s breath hitched. For weeks, she had fought the overwhelming attraction pulling her toward this dangerous, complicated man. She had told herself she was just a waitress, just an employee caught in a mafia crossfire.
But looking into his eyes, she saw the truth. She didn't want the quiet, boring life in Boston.
She loved the boy sleeping in the nursery.
And she loved the dark king who would tear down the world to keep them safe.
Clara reached up, her fingers tangling into Rico’s thick, dark hair.
“You’re an arrogant, stubborn, dangerous man, Ricardo Moretti,” Clara whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek.
Rico’s lips curved into a breathtaking, rare smile. “I know.”
“And you’re completely impossible to leave.”
May you like
Rico didn't wait. He pulled her up from the chair and crashed his lips against hers in a fierce, intoxicating kiss that erased every doubt, every shadow, and every fear lingering in the quiet mansion.
