Chapter 6 - The Trap at the Gala

The revelation about Matteo Rossi turned the Moretti estate into a subterranean war room.

For forty-eight hours, Rico did not sleep. Behind closed oak doors, he convened quiet, lethal meetings with Dante and a select few loyal captains. Wiretaps were placed, offshore bank accounts scrutinized, and safe houses monitored.

Yet, Rico could not simply execute his underboss. Matteo was deeply connected to the older Italian families in Manhattan; killing him without undeniable proof would trigger an all-out syndicate war that would turn Brooklyn into a slaughterhouse.

The proof would come tonight.

The annual Winter Solstice Gala at the Plaza Hotel was the premier gathering of New York’s high society, attended by politicians, foreign dignitaries, and the five major families who quietly controlled the city's underbelly. Matteo Rossi had organized the event.

“You’re coming with me,” Rico announced, walking into Clara’s suite without knocking.

Clara was sitting on the rug, reading a storybook to Leo. She looked up in disbelief. “To an elite gala? I’m a waitress, Rico. I don't belong at the Plaza, and Leo shouldn't be anywhere near crowds.”

“Leo is not coming,” Rico said, motioning to the doorway.

Two women entered, carrying garment bags and a velvet case.

“Rosa and six armed guards will remain here with Leo in the underground bunker,” Rico explained, his eyes never leaving Clara. “You are coming as my date.”

Clara stood up, her jaw dropping. “Your date? Have you lost your mind? The whole city thinks you’re an untouchable widower! If I show up on your arm, everyone will target me!”

“Exactly,” Rico said coldly. “Matteo thinks I am vulnerable. He believes Leo’s silence is permanent. But tonight, word will leak that you have gotten Leo to speak—and that the boy remembered the silver snake. Matteo will panic. He will try to approach you, to find out exactly what the boy told you. When he makes his move, we trap him.”

Clara felt a wave of icy terror. “You’re using me as bait.”

Rico walked across the room until he stood inches from her. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing across her jawline—a touch that was surprisingly tender, completely betraying the coldness of his words.

“I will be standing five feet from you every second of the night, Clara,” Rico whispered, his deep voice vibrating in her chest. “I swear on my son’s life, no one will lay a finger on you. But I need you. I cannot do this without you.”

The raw honesty in his eyes disarmed her. For all his power, Rico was a desperate man fighting to protect the only pieces of his soul that remained.

“All right,” Clara breathed, her pulse racing. “I’ll do it.”

Two hours later, Clara Vance was transformed.

The stylists had swept her dark auburn hair into an elegant chignon, leaving delicate tendrils framing her face. She wore a bespoke emerald-green silk gown that clung to her curves, cut low at the back, shimmering like liquid jade under the chandeliers. Around her neck, Rico had fastened a five-carat diamond pendant—a family heirloom that had belonged to his grandmother.

When she descended the grand staircase, Rico was waiting in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo.

He didn't speak for a full thirty seconds. His dark eyes raked over her, a spark of possessive, intoxicating heat flaring in his expression.

“Breathtaking,” Rico murmured, offering his arm.

“Don't get used to it,” Clara whispered back, though her heart hammered wildly as she rested her gloved hand against his bicep.

The Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of diamonds, champagne, and lethal power.

When Ricardo Moretti entered the grand ballroom with an unknown, stunning brunette on his arm, the room went completely silent. Whispers rippled through the crowd of billionaires, politicians, and mafia capos.

Across the room, standing beside a group of Manhattan councilmen, stood Matteo Rossi.

He was forty, handsome, with slicked-back graying hair and a silver signet ring on his pinky. When Matteo’s eyes met Clara’s, his smile faltered.

Rico leaned down, his lips brushing Clara’s ear, making a shiver race down her spine. “The wolf has seen the lamb. Smile, Clara. Make him sweat.”

For the next hour, Clara played her role flawlessly. She smiled, sipped vintage champagne, and held her head high as Rico introduced her to high-society elites as his son’s personal guardian and confidante.

Then, during an orchestral waltz, Rico was intentionally pulled away by the Police Commissioner—part of their orchestrated plan.

Clara moved toward the champagne fountain on the terrace, pretending to catch her breath.

Within ninety seconds, the heavy velvet curtain shifted. Matteo Rossi stepped out onto the moonlit balcony, holding two flutes of champagne.

“You must be the miracle worker,” Matteo said smoothly, flashing a predatory smile. “Clara, isn't it? The little waitress who tamed the beast.”

Clara turned, adopting an expression of nervous innocence. “Mr. Rossi. Ricardo speaks very highly of your loyalty.”

Matteo chuckled, stepping closer. “Ricardo is a broken man, my dear. He sees loyalty where it doesn't exist. Tell me... how is little Leo doing? I hear you’ve gotten him to speak again.”

Clara tightened her grip on her evening clutch, remembering Rico’s instructions.

“He speaks a little,” Clara said, letting her voice drop to a fearful whisper. “Mostly about the night his mother died. He keeps talking about a motorcycle with a silver snake. He said the man took off his helmet before the fire.”

Matteo’s smile instantly vanished.

The polished charm melted from his face, replaced by a cold, calculating malice that made Clara’s blood run cold.

“Is that so?” Matteo murmured, sliding his hand into his dinner jacket. “Children have vivid imaginations. It’s a tragedy when an overactive imagination cuts a child’s life short.”

“Are you threatening my son, Matteo?”

A voice like cocked steel cut through the freezing night air.

Matteo whipped around.

Rico stood in the doorway of the terrace, framed by Dante and three stone-faced enforcers. In Rico’s hand was an encrypted smartphone displaying a live audio recording of their entire conversation.

“You’re finished, Matteo,” Rico said, his voice flat, devoid of mercy. “You killed Elena for a slice of the docks. And tonight, you just signed your death warrant.”

Matteo didn't surrender. With terrifying speed, the underboss pulled a snub-nosed revolver from his jacket, lunging not at Rico, but straight toward Clara.
