Chapter 7 - Blood on the Marble

Everything descended into chaos in the span of a single heartbeat.
Matteo grabbed Clara by the wrist, swinging her around to use her as a human shield, pressing the cold steel barrel of the revolver against her temple.
“Back up, Rico!” Matteo screamed, his polished composure dissolving into manic hysteria. “Call off your dogs or I paint the terrace with her brains!”
The ballroom music stopped abruptly as screams echoed from the guests who saw the gun through the glass doors.
Rico didn't back up. He didn't blink. But Clara saw the terrifying storm brewing behind his dark eyes—a rage so absolute it threatened to consume the entire building.
“Let her go, Matteo,” Rico said. His voice was unnervingly calm. “You walk out of this hotel, you get twelve hours before I hunt you down. Harm a hair on her head, and you will beg for the sweet release of hell before dawn.”
“You think I care about twelve hours?” Matteo spat, backing toward the stone balustrade overlooking Central Park South. “The Lucianos already have your estate surrounded, Rico! While you’ve been playing dress-up with this whore, my hit team breached your compound! Your boy is already dead!”
The lie was designed to break Rico’s focus.
It worked—for half a second. Rico’s eyes widened with visceral dread.
In that fraction of a second, Clara reacted.
She didn't wait to be rescued. Channeling every ounce of adrenaline coursing through her veins, she drove the three-inch steel stiletto heel of her Louboutin pump down into the bridge of Matteo’s polished leather shoe with crushing force.
Matteo roared in pain, his grip loosening.
Clara slammed her elbow backward into his throat, twisting violently out of his grasp and dropping to the marble floor.
*Bang!*
Matteo’s shot went wild, shattering the terrace glass.
Before Matteo could re-aim, Rico closed the distance like a black panther.
Rico’s left hand seized Matteo’s gun wrist, snapping the joint backward with a sickening *crack*. Matteo shrieked as the revolver clattered onto the stone. Rico drove a vicious knee into Matteo’s ribs, followed by a crushing elbow strike to the side of his skull.
Matteo collapsed against the marble balustrade, coughing blood.
Rico didn't stop. He dragged the underboss up by his tuxedo collar, lifting him clear off his feet and dangling him over the sheer four-story drop above the Plaza’s concrete courtyard.
“Rico, no!” Clara cried out, scrambling to her feet, her silk dress torn at the shoulder. “Not here! Don't do this in front of everyone!”
Rico’s chest heaved. His knuckles were white as he held the struggling traitor over the abyss. Across the glass terrace, dozens of high-society guests and cell phone cameras were recording the scene. Pulling Matteo over would end Rico’s freedom forever.
Rico looked back over his shoulder.
He saw Clara standing amidst the broken glass, her breathing ragged, her eyes pleading with him. Not with fear of him—but with fear *for* him.
With a guttural snarl, Rico threw Matteo backward onto the safety of the terrace floor.
Dante stepped forward instantly, driving his heavy boot into Matteo’s spine, zip-tying his hands behind his back.
Rico turned to Clara. He crossed the terrace in two strides, his hands coming up to cup her face with desperate urgency. His thumbs wiped away a smear of soot and a stray tear from her cheek.
“Are you hurt? Did he cut you?” Rico’s voice was cracked, frantic, stripping away every ounce of the mob boss persona.
“I’m okay,” Clara gasped, leaning into his hands, her body trembling with delayed shock. “I’m okay, Rico.”
Rico pulled her fiercely against his chest, wrapping his arms around her as if she were the only anchor keeping him tethered to the earth. Clara buried her face in his neck, breathing in the scent of cedar and gunpowder, her arms wrapping around his broad shoulders.
“Boss,” Dante interrupted, his phone pressed to his ear. His voice was grave. “Matteo wasn't lying about the estate.”
Rico pulled back instantly, his eyes hardening into flint. “Report.”
