Chapter 8 - The Full Unedited Reel

The four-thousand-seat auditorium became so silent that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a roaring engine.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
On the massive forty-foot screen, Victoria Ashford’s face was magnified to horrifying proportions.
The high-fidelity directional microphones in the ceiling of the ballroom had captured every single whisper with absolute clarity.
Victoria’s recorded voice boomed through the opera house speakers like an executioner’s bell.
“You should be grateful they let you attend,” the screen showed Victoria snarling down at Eleanor.
“I was invited by the groom’s mother,” Eleanor’s frail, dignified voice replied on the screen.
“Some people simply don’t understand their place,” Victoria’s recorded voice sneered.
And then, the moment arrived.
On screen, Eleanor looked away with quiet dignity.
Victoria’s hand raised up into the light of the chandeliers.
SLAP!
The sound of Victoria striking the eighty-five-year-old woman in the wheelchair echoed through the Opera House with sickening force.
Several women in the front row shrieked and covered their mouths in sheer horror.
A prominent federal judge sitting in the center aisle stood up in visible disgust.
Victoria Ashford stood on the stage, completely paralyzed, staring up at her own monstrous face on the screen.
“No... turn it off! Turn it off this instant!” Victoria screamed into the microphone, but her microphone had been cut dead.
The video continued without mercy.
The screen showed Eleanor’s white hair falling across her bruised face, tears welling in her gentle eyes.
And then, Maya Collins appeared on screen.
The audience watched as the humble young waitress put down her heavy tray and stepped directly between the predator and the victim.
They watched Maya catch Victoria’s second strike in mid-air with incredible courage.
“Don’t touch her again,” Maya’s recorded voice rang out with unyielding moral power.
They watched Victoria violently shove the waitress, stumble backward, and destroy the champagne tower in a blind rage.
And then, Daniel Bennett walked into the frame.
The video showed Daniel immediately checking on his mother, treating her with infinite tenderness.
It showed Victoria screeching lies, attempting to accuse the innocent waitress of assault.
And finally, the screen froze on a split image.
On the left was Victoria’s vicious, twisted face mid-strike.
On the right was the fake tabloid front page she had manufactured that morning, accusing Maya of assault.
Beneath the images, large white text appeared for all one thousand elite guests to read:
‘VICTORIA ASHFORD: CONVICTED OF MALICE IN THE COURT OF HUMAN DECENCY.’
A heavy, suffocating gasp swept through the entire auditorium.
The socialites who had hugged Victoria ten minutes earlier shrank away from the stage as if she were carrying the plague.
Suddenly, the grand double doors at the back of the auditorium swung wide open.
A solitary spotlight shifted from the stage and illuminated the center aisle.

Daniel Bennett walked slowly down the red carpet, pushing his mother’s wheelchair.
And walking beside them, radiating dignity and unmatched grace in her silver gown, was Maya Collins.
