Chapter 5 - The Financial Guillotine

At two o’clock in the afternoon, the private boardroom of Ashford Maritime was suffocating with panic.

Richard Ashford was sweating through his bespoke Italian shirt, his tie loosened around his collar.

Across the table sat five grim-faced bank representatives, all holding identical red folders.

“What do you mean you’re freezing our credit lines?” Richard shouted, slamming both palms onto the mahogany.

“Mr. Ashford, Bennett Global acquired your debt obligations at six o'clock this morning,” the lead banker replied flatly.

“They have exercised their legal clause demanding immediate collateral verification.”

“You can't do that without thirty days' written notice!” Richard protested, his voice cracking with hysteria.

The banker slid an official document across the table.

“You signed an accelerated default rider when you took out the emergency loan last winter.”

“If your company faces any federal investigation or material liability, the creditor can demand immediate repayment.”

Richard’s breath hitched in his throat.

“What federal investigation? We haven't done anything illegal!”

Right on cue, the boardroom double doors burst open.

Four federal agents wearing navy jackets with gold letters marched into the room.

“Richard Ashford?” the lead agent asked, flashing a gold badge.

“I am Special Agent Miller, Federal Maritime and Labor Commission.”

“We are executing a search warrant for all communications between your executive office and the Metropolitan Hospitality Union.”

Richard slumped back into his chair, the blood completely draining from his face.

“Victoria...” he whispered in horrifying realization.

“She bribed the union boss from our joint account.”

The bankers immediately stood up and closed their red folders in unison.

“Your accounts are officially frozen, Mr. Ashford,” the lead banker said with cold finality.

“Have a good day.”

The bankers walked out, leaving Richard surrounded by federal agents seizing his hard drives and financial ledgers.

Meanwhile, across town at the exclusive salon on Fifth Avenue, Victoria Ashford was sipping champagne while having her hair styled.

She was admiring her reflection in the gilded mirror, utterly convinced that she had won the battle.

The tabloid story was trending online, with thousands of ignorant comments condemning the ‘violent waitress.’

Suddenly, her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen and saw her husband's name.

“Richard darling, are you getting dressed for the opera gala tonight?” she asked airily.

“Victoria, you stupid, arrogant monster!” Richard screamed through the phone, weeping openly.

Victoria gasped, pulling the phone away from her ear before pressing it back.

“How dare you speak to me like that!” she hissed.

“The feds are in my office!” Richard shrieked.

“The bank just froze all of our assets! Our ships are blocked at the port!”

“We are ruined! Completely, totally ruined!”

Victoria’s hand began to shake so violently that she spilled champagne onto her silk designer dress.

“What... what are you talking about?” she stammered, her voice suddenly trembling.

“Daniel Bennett is systematically slaughtering our business!” Richard cried out.

“He bought our debt! He traced your bribe to the union boss!”

“He’s not just a billionaire, Victoria, he’s an apex predator, and you slapped his mother in front of two hundred people!”

Victoria rose from her chair, knocking over a tray of expensive styling products.

The hairdressers and patrons turned to stare at her in shock.

“Fix it, Richard! Call the mayor! Call the governor!” Victoria demanded, panic rising in her chest.

“Nobody is answering my calls!” Richard screamed.

“The only thing that can save us from prison and total bankruptcy is if you crawl on your knees to Daniel Bennett!”

“I will never crawl to that peasant!” Victoria snarled through gritted teeth.

“Then prepare to spend the rest of your life in an orange jumpsuit,” Richard said, his voice dropping into utter despair.

“Because the feds just found the wire transfer receipt.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Victoria stood frozen in the middle of the salon, her chest heaving as terror finally clawed its way into her heart.

She looked at her reflection in the mirror.

The untouchable queen of high society was beginning to crack.

“No,” Victoria whispered to herself, clenching her manicured fists until her nails bit into her skin.

“I still have the gala tonight.”

“I will turn the entire city against them before they can tear me down.”
