Chapter 4 - The Lion Awakens

Maya sat in the plush leather interior of Daniel’s armored Maybach, completely paralyzed with shock.
“Mr. Bennett, this is too much,” Maya whispered, her hands shaking in her lap.
“I am just a waitress who did the right thing.”
Daniel adjusted the gold cufflinks on his crisp white shirt without looking away from his tablet.
“Doing the right thing in a world full of cowards makes you exceptional, Maya,” he replied evenly.
“And my family never abandons those who stand up for us.”
The car glided effortlessly toward the financial district, stopping in front of the towering Bennett Tower.
Dozens of reporters were already gathering near the entrance, holding cameras and microphones.
Maya gasped as she saw the front page of the morning tabloid displayed on a digital news kiosk.
The headline read: ‘SOCIETY WEDDING RUINED BY ROGUE WAITRESS AND DISRUPTIVE GUEST!’
Underneath was a blurry, unflattering photo of Maya being escorted out of the ballroom.
“They printed it,” Maya choked out, feeling an agonizing knot tighten in her throat.
“They are portraying you and your mother as monsters, and me as a criminal!”
Daniel glanced out the window at the flashing cameras with complete indifference.
“A lie travels halfway around the world before the truth can put its shoes on,” Daniel quoted smoothly.
“Victoria thinks she controls the narrative because she paid off a trashy tabloid editor.”
“She forgets who owns the ink, the paper, and the satellites that transmit the news.”
Daniel tapped his intercom to speak to the driver.
“Take us down to the private executive garage, Thomas.”
“Yes, Mr. Bennett.”
Two minutes later, Maya found herself riding an express elevator that shot straight up to the seventieth floor.
When the doors slid open, an entire floor of high-powered attorneys, financial analysts, and public relations executives stood at attention.
Marcus Vance, Daniel’s head of security, stepped forward with an encrypted hard drive in his hand.
“Boss, we have completed the financial audit of Ashford Maritime,” Marcus reported crisply.
Daniel walked into the massive glass conference room, gesturing for Maya to follow him.
“Present the findings,” Daniel ordered, sitting at the head of the forty-foot marble table.
Marcus tapped a button, and the wall-sized digital display illuminated with intricate financial flowcharts.
“Ashford Maritime is currently operating on a razor-thin cash reserve of four million dollars,” Marcus explained.
“They have three major container ships docked in the bay carrying perishable cargo.”
“Those ships cannot unload until the port authority clears their environmental compliance fees.”
Daniel leaned back in his leather chair, his fingers steepled in deep thought.
“Who owns the holding company that manages the port authority’s logistics contract?” Daniel asked.
“A subsidiary of Bennett Global, sir,” Marcus answered with a slight, predatory grin.
“Issue an immediate stop-work order on all Ashford cargo until a full safety inspection is completed,” Daniel commanded.
“That will cost them half a million dollars every single hour they sit idle,” the chief financial officer noted.
“Good,” Daniel replied without a shred of remorse.
“Now, what about the hospitality union that revoked Maya’s certification?”
Marcus pulled up another file on the giant screen.
“The union director, Thomas Sterling, received a sixty-thousand-dollar personal transfer from Victoria Ashford’s private account this morning.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed into terrifying slits of pure fury.
“A direct bribe to destroy a working girl’s livelihood.”
Daniel turned toward his lead legal counsel, a formidable woman named Sarah Sterling.
“Sarah, file a federal racketeering and extortion lawsuit against the union director within the hour.”
“I want the Department of Labor crawling through their offices before lunch.”
“Consider it done, Mr. Bennett,” Sarah replied, already typing furiously on her laptop.
Maya stood frozen in the corner of the room, listening to empires being shifted with simple sentences.
She had spent her life scraping together pennies for rent, watching powerful people step on the poor without consequence.
Now, for the first time in her existence, she was watching a titan use his power to protect the innocent.
“Mr. Bennett?” Maya spoke up timidly.
Daniel looked up, his terrifying expression softening instantly as he met her eyes.
“Yes, Maya?”
“Victoria Ashford is holding a high-society charity gala tonight at the Grand Opera House,” Maya said.
“I heard the catering staff talking about it yesterday before the wedding.”
“She invited every prominent family, politician, and business leader in the state.”
A cold, breathtaking smile spread across Daniel Bennett’s face.
“A charity gala,” Daniel mused, tapping his desk.

“She wants an audience to celebrate her untouchable prestige.”
“Then an audience is precisely what we will give her.”
