Chapter 5 - THE FATHER WHO REFUSED TO STAY DEAD

Daniel stared at the man he had buried nine years earlier.

Charles Whitmore looked almost exactly as Daniel remembered him.

The same controlled posture.

The same calculating gray eyes.

The same slight smile that never reached them.

Noah moved behind Elena.

Charles noticed.

“That isn’t necessary.”

Daniel stepped between his father and the others.

“You kidnapped my son.”

“I brought my grandson somewhere safe.”

“You took him from a ballroom during a blackout.”

“A blackout I arranged because Vivienne was about to remove him.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“You expect me to believe you were protecting him?”

“No.”

Charles stepped inside.

“I expect you to question everyone.”

“Starting with you.”

“Good.”

Daniel lifted the medical file.

“What is this?”

Charles looked at it.

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That Noah is yours.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“I already believed Noah was mine.”

Charles looked toward Elena.

“You misunderstood.”

Elena tightened her arms around Noah.

Charles continued.

“Noah is yours.”

“And hers.”

Daniel stared.

“How?”

Charles walked toward an old wooden chair.

His movements were slower than Daniel remembered.

He sat.

“Your mother died because of a genetic condition our doctors failed to detect.”

Daniel’s anger flickered.

“Don’t use her.”

“I’m explaining.”

“You disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me bury an empty coffin.”

Charles showed no shame.

“It was necessary.”

“For whom?”

“For you.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everything you ever did was supposedly for me.”

“And much of it was.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Was stealing my baby for him too?”

Charles looked at her.

“No.”

The answer surprised everyone.

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why?”

“Because Vivienne made a decision I never authorized.”

Daniel stared at him.

Charles continued.

“Years ago, I established a private reproductive research program.”

“You mean your clinic.”

“Yes.”

“You stored my genetic material.”

“Yes.”

“Without my permission?”

“You signed consent forms.”

“For medical testing.”

“The language was broader.”

Daniel almost lunged at him.

Elena spoke first.

“And me?”

Charles looked at her.

“You participated in a fertility study.”

Elena frowned.

“I was paid seventy-five dollars for blood work.”

“You signed documents too.”

Her face filled with disgust.

“You manipulated poor people into signing forms they didn’t understand.”

Charles didn’t deny it.

Daniel stared at the file.

“How did she become pregnant?”

Charles was silent.

Daniel’s stomach turned.

“Answer me.”

“Through a procedure she believed was routine treatment after complications from an ovarian condition.”

Elena stepped backward.

“No.”

Charles looked at her.

“You were told the procedure would improve fertility.”

“I remember.”

“It did more than that.”

Elena’s face went white.

Daniel felt sick.

“You experimented on her.”

Charles replied calmly.

“The procedure should never have been performed without full disclosure.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

Charles finally looked ashamed.

“It isn’t.”

Noah began crying quietly.

Elena immediately crouched.

“Sweetheart.”

Charles watched them.

Something softened in his expression.

Daniel noticed.

“Why Noah?”

Charles looked at him.

“Because the pregnancy succeeded.”

Daniel shook his head.

“There had to be other patients.”

“There were.”

“How many?”

Charles remained silent.

“How many?”

“Thirty-two.”

Elena covered Noah’s ears.

Daniel stared.

“And how many children?”

“Three confirmed pregnancies.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“Three?”

Charles nodded.

“Noah was the only child reported as surviving.”

Daniel caught the wording.

“Reported?”

Charles leaned on his cane.

“That is where this becomes complicated.”

Daniel laughed without humor.

“It wasn’t complicated enough?”

Charles ignored him.

“When I discovered Elena’s pregnancy, I ordered the program shut down.”

“Why?”

“Because I learned consent protocols had been violated.”

“You owned the clinic.”

“I did not supervise every procedure.”

“But you covered it up.”

“Yes.”

The admission came easily.

Daniel hated him for that.

“Then Vivienne found out.”

Charles continued.

“She knew you had always wanted children.”

Daniel stared.

“We weren’t married yet.”

“No.”

“She was pregnant.”

Charles looked at him.

“No.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“Vivienne was never pregnant.”

Daniel stared.

“No.”

“She told you she was.”

“I saw her.”

“You saw padded clothing.”

“I went to appointments.”

“Appointments at my clinic.”

Daniel remembered.

Every ultrasound had been performed privately.

Vivienne had always said it was because of security.

“You knew.”

“I discovered it late.”

Daniel’s hands shook.

“Why would she fake a pregnancy?”

Charles looked toward Noah.

“Because she had already learned about Elena.”

Elena stood.

“She wanted my baby.”

“Yes.”

Daniel felt nauseated.

Charles continued.

“Vivienne knew the child was biologically yours.”

“She believed if she presented Noah as her own, she would secure her place in the Whitmore family permanently.”

Daniel stared at his father.

“And you let her.”

“No.”

“Then how did it happen?”

“Vivienne had help.”

“Who?”

Charles looked toward the mansion.

“Someone who is still helping her.”

Daniel thought of the ballroom.

The blackout.

The fake hospital records.

The dead detective.

“Who?”

Before Charles could answer, glass shattered.

Daniel instinctively turned.

A stone had smashed through one greenhouse panel.

Something metallic rolled across the floor.

Charles’s expression changed instantly.

“Down!”

Daniel grabbed Noah.

Charles kicked the object toward the open door with his cane.

A deafening burst followed outside.

Not an explosion.

A flash device.

Daniel’s ears rang.

Elena screamed Noah’s name.

Smoke filled the doorway.

Daniel felt someone strike him from behind.

He fell.

Noah slipped from his arms.

“Noah!”

Shapes moved through the smoke.

Daniel tried to stand.

A boot slammed against his shoulder.

Elena grabbed Noah and crawled beneath one of the greenhouse tables.

Charles swung his cane.

Someone cursed.

Daniel lunged toward the attacker.

He caught a black jacket.

The man twisted free.

Another figure appeared.

Then a woman’s voice came through the smoke.

“Take the files!”

Daniel recognized it.

Vivienne.

“Elena!”

Daniel shouted.

“Keep Noah down!”

He crawled toward the safe.

The medical files were gone.

Vivienne stood near the doorway holding them against her chest.

Daniel stared at her.

She stared back.

Her glamorous black gown had been replaced by dark pants and a coat.

“You.”

Vivienne smiled sadly.

“You should have listened to me.”

Daniel moved toward her.

A masked man stepped between them.

Charles shouted.

“Daniel, don’t!”

Vivienne backed toward the door.

Daniel pointed at her.

“You stole Noah.”

Her expression changed.

“I saved Noah.”

“From his mother?”

“From all of you.”

Elena emerged from beneath the table.

“Give me my son’s records.”

Vivienne looked at her.

Hatred filled her eyes.

“You were supposed to disappear.”

Elena went still.

“What?”

“I gave you money.”

“You gave me a funeral bill.”

Vivienne laughed.

“You really believed that?”

Elena stared.

“You sent me a bill for my baby’s cremation.”

Daniel looked at her in horror.

Elena’s voice cracked.

“I paid it.”

Vivienne shrugged.

“You needed closure.”

Something in Elena changed.

She handed Noah to Daniel.

Then she walked toward Vivienne.

“Elena.”

Daniel warned.

She didn’t stop.

Vivienne smiled.

“What are you going to do?”

Elena stopped inches away.

“For seven years, I blamed myself.”

Vivienne’s smile weakened.

“I thought maybe I had done something wrong.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought maybe I hadn’t been strong enough.”

Vivienne stepped backward.

“I woke up every night hearing a baby cry.”

“Elena.”

“I bought a birthday cake every April eighteenth.”

Vivienne looked uncomfortable now.

“I never ate it.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“I just lit one candle.”

Elena’s voice became steady.

“And every year, I apologized to a child I believed was buried somewhere without me.”

Vivienne looked away.

Elena grabbed the medical files.

Vivienne pulled back.

The folder tore.

Pages scattered across the greenhouse floor.

One page landed near Daniel.

He looked down.

A name caught his attention.

Not Noah.

Not Elena.

Another child.

Subject B-17.

Live birth confirmed.

Daniel picked it up.

Charles saw the page.

His face changed.

Daniel looked at him.

“You said Noah was the only surviving child.”

Charles didn’t answer.

Daniel read further.

The birth had occurred two years before Noah.

A girl.

Daniel looked at his father.

“Who is she?”

Charles whispered.

“Daniel…”

“Who is she?”

Vivienne suddenly stopped fighting Elena.

Everyone looked at Charles.

The old man closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, Daniel saw something he had never expected.

Fear.

“Her name is Sophie.”

Daniel stared.

“Where is she?”

Charles looked directly at Vivienne.

“I don’t know.”

Vivienne smiled.

May you like

“But I do.”

And before anyone could stop her, she dropped the files and ran into the darkness.
