Chapter 18 - THE COURTROOM TRAP

By 7:55 a.m., reporters surrounded the courthouse.
Someone had leaked everything.
But not the truth.
Headlines painted Elena as an unstable former hospital patient who had infiltrated a wealthy family.
Photographs showed her hugging Noah at the gala.
Another showed Vivienne’s slap.
But the captions focused on Elena.
MAID CLAIMS SOCIALITE’S SON.
MENTAL HEALTH HISTORY RAISES QUESTIONS.
WHITMORE HEIR CAUGHT IN CUSTODY CHAOS.
Daniel threw the newspaper into a trash can.
“They planned this.”
Agent Brooks nodded.
“Public pressure before the hearing.”
Elena sat in a private room.
Her face was pale.
Daniel crouched in front of her.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“They made the records.”
“I know.”
“They’re going to say I’m unstable.”
“I know.”
“They’re going to make Noah hear it.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“They are not taking him from you again.”
Elena stared at him.
“You can’t promise that.”
Daniel thought of Noah asking if he would still be Daddy.
He understood Elena now.
Promises mattered most when they were difficult.
“I can promise I will fight.”
She nodded.
That was enough.
Courtroom 4A filled before eight.
Judge Eleanor Voss entered from chambers.
Daniel stared at her.
She looked exactly as she had at the gala.
Perfect.
Controlled.
Untouchable.
“All rise.”
Nobody knew yet that federal agents were seated in the back row.
Voss looked at Elena.
“Ms. Bennett.”
Her voice carried fake sympathy.
“You appear tired.”
Elena did not answer.
Her attorney, Sarah Klein, stood.
“Your Honor, we move for immediate recusal.”
Voss raised an eyebrow.
“Grounds?”
“Conflict of interest.”
“Specify.”
Sarah looked toward Agent Brooks.
“Federal evidence connects this court to falsified guardianship records.”
Murmurs filled the room.
Voss struck the gavel.
“Order.”
She looked at Sarah.
“That is an extraordinary accusation.”
“It is supported.”
“By?”
Elena stood.
Daniel almost stopped her.
She looked directly at Voss.
“By the records you signed.”
The courtroom erupted.
Voss’s face did not move.
“Ms. Bennett, sit down.”
Elena remained standing.
“You told the hospital I was mentally unstable.”
Voss struck the gavel.
“Sit down.”
“You signed paperwork saying my baby died.”
“Sit down.”
“You helped another woman take him.”
Voss’s mask cracked.
“Bailiff.”
Two bailiffs approached.
Daniel stood.
Agent Brooks stood too.
“Federal agents.”
The courtroom froze.
Brooks displayed identification.
“Do not touch Ms. Bennett.”
Voss stared at her.
“This is my courtroom.”
Brooks nodded.
“For the moment.”
The reporters began whispering.
Voss’s attorney stepped forward.
The judge ignored him.
She looked at Daniel.
“You have been manipulated.”
Daniel laughed.
“By Elena?”
“Yes.”
“You have known her for less than a year.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“My son knew her before I did.”
Voss’s expression tightened.
Daniel continued.
“And he knew enough to run across a ballroom full of strangers to reach her.”
Silence.
Voss looked toward Noah.
The boy sat with Rachel in the back.
He stared at Voss.
Not frightened.
Angry.
Judge Voss changed tactics.
“This proceeding concerns the safety of a minor.”
Sarah Klein raised a folder.
“Then let us discuss safety.”
She presented the real hospital records.
DNA results.
Video evidence.
Audio recordings.
Voss objected repeatedly.
The appellate judge appearing remotely denied her authority to rule on her own recusal.
Within twenty minutes, Voss was removed from the bench.
She stood.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
Agent Brooks approached.
“Eleanor Voss, you are being detained pending federal charges involving conspiracy, falsification of medical records, unlawful custody transfers, obstruction, and trafficking-related offenses.”
The courtroom exploded.
Voss smiled.
Daniel hated that smile.
“You think this ends with me?”
Agent Brooks cuffed her.
Voss looked toward Elena.
“Ask your sister why she never came home.”
Rachel froze.
Elena turned.
“What?”
Voss laughed softly.
“Go ahead.”
“Ask her.”
Rachel went pale.
Elena stared.
“What is she talking about?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Nothing.”
Voss smiled wider.
“There.”
“That face.”
Elena stepped toward Rachel.
“What did you do?”
Rachel whispered.
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
Rachel looked at Sophie.
Then Noah.
Then Adrian.
“I made a deal.”
Daniel felt dread.
“With Voss?”
Rachel nodded.
Elena stared.
“What deal?”
Rachel began crying.
“She promised to keep you alive.”
“In exchange for what?”
Rachel could barely speak.
“The children.”
Silence.
Elena stopped moving.
“What?”
Rachel sobbed.
“I gave her the location of the clinic records.”
“No.”
“I gave her names.”
“No.”
“I thought if I cooperated she would leave you alone.”
Elena stepped backward.
“You helped them?”
“For a while.”
“You knew about Noah?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Not until after.”
“Sophie?”
“I thought I could get her back.”
Elena’s voice became hollow.
“You let me believe she was dead.”
Rachel cried harder.
“I thought that was the only way to keep you from searching.”
Elena laughed once.
A broken sound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Daniel stared at Rachel.
Another protector.
Another liar.
Another person choosing Elena’s life for her.
Rachel looked at her sister.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena shook her head.
“Not now.”
“Elena.”
“Not now.”
She walked out.
Daniel followed.
Outside the courtroom, Elena leaned against a wall.
He did not touch her.
She whispered.
“I don’t know who I’m allowed to love anymore.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You don’t have to decide today.”
She closed her eyes.
“My mother lied.”
“My sister lied.”
“Vivienne stole my children.”
“Charles used me.”
“Adrian watched me.”
“And you…”
Daniel waited.
She looked at him.
“You were living inside the lie too.”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“That’s the only reason I can stand looking at you.”
Daniel accepted it.
His phone rang.
Marcus.
Daniel answered.
“What?”
“We found Nathaniel.”
Daniel straightened.
“Is he safe?”
A pause.
“Physically.”
“What does that mean?”
Marcus’s voice darkened.
“He says Voss isn’t the person we should be afraid of.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Who is?”
Marcus hesitated.
“The man he calls Grandpa.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Charles?”
“No.”
Daniel stared.
“Then who?”
May you like
Marcus’s next words changed everything again.
“Victor Laurent.”
