Chapter 12 - ELI

Marcus Hale had spent twenty-three years teaching frightened families how not to panic.

Now he could barely hold his phone.

Daniel watched the detective transform.

The professional calm vanished.

The controlled voice disappeared.

What remained was a father.

Or a man who had believed he was one.

Marcus spoke into the phone.

“Laura, lock every door.”

“I already did.”

“Police are coming.”

“What about Eli?”

“I’m finding him.”

“Marcus…”

His sister’s voice broke.

“What is happening?”

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“I’ll explain later.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“No.”

Marcus turned.

“You’re not explaining later.”

Vivienne laughed quietly.

Marcus spun toward her.

“If anything happens to that boy—”

“You’ll what?”

She smiled.

“Arrest me harder?”

Marcus looked ready to lunge at her.

Daniel stepped between them.

“We need Eli.”

Marcus breathed hard.

Daniel continued.

“And right now she is the only person here who knows more than we do.”

He looked at Vivienne.

“Who took him?”

She shrugged.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel grabbed her handcuffed wrists.

She flinched.

“You knew enough to predict this.”

“I predicted nothing.”

“You told us someone else was raising my son.”

“I told you what I knew.”

“Then tell me the rest.”

Vivienne’s smile faded.

“Victor gave the child away.”

“To whom?”

“I never knew.”

“Why not?”

“Because by then, my father didn’t trust me.”

Charles laughed bitterly.

“A rare moment of good judgment.”

Vivienne glared at him.

Daniel ignored them.

“Why would Victor give the baby away?”

Vivienne looked at Elena.

“Because he was sick.”

Elena’s face tightened.

“How sick?”

“Heart problems.”

Charles went rigid.

Daniel saw it.

“The Whitmore defect.”

Charles nodded.

Vivienne continued.

“Victor believed the baby would die.”

“So he discarded him.”

Vivienne gave Daniel a cold look.

“My father didn’t see people the way you do.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Neither do you.”

Her jaw tightened.

Marcus interrupted.

“Who killed Samuel?”

Vivienne looked at him.

“You won’t like the answer.”

“I don’t care.”

“Yes, you do.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Say it.”

Vivienne watched him.

“Your wife.”

Marcus froze.

The silence afterward felt impossible.

Daniel stared.

Marcus shook his head.

“Anna died three years ago.”

Vivienne nodded.

“That time, yes.”

Marcus’s face emptied.

“No.”

“Samuel discovered where Eli came from.”

“No.”

“He confronted Anna.”

“No.”

“He told her he was going to tell you.”

Marcus moved so suddenly two officers stepped forward.

Daniel caught him.

Vivienne did not flinch.

Marcus shouted.

“You’re lying!”

“Ask yourself why Samuel came to your house the night he died.”

Marcus stopped.

Daniel felt cold.

“You said Reed died during a home invasion.”

Marcus’s breathing became uneven.

Vivienne tilted her head.

“He did.”

“Just not his home.”

Marcus stared.

Vivienne continued.

“Yours.”

Marcus whispered.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You were there?”

Marcus shook his head.

“I was working.”

Vivienne smiled without warmth.

“Anna wasn’t.”

Marcus’s face collapsed.

Memories were clearly rearranging themselves behind his eyes.

Daniel understood that feeling now.

Every old moment becoming suspicious.

Every ordinary detail turning into evidence.

Marcus whispered.

“Samuel called me that night.”

Vivienne watched him.

“What did he say?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“He said…”

His voice failed.

“He said, ‘Your family isn’t what you think.’”

Daniel felt Elena move beside him.

Marcus looked at Vivienne.

“I thought he meant the case.”

“He did.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

Vivienne continued.

“Anna had been working for Victor.”

“For how long?”

“Years.”

Marcus whispered.

“She was a pediatric nurse.”

“At Laurent Children’s Research Center.”

Marcus stared.

He had not known.

Daniel could see that.

“She told me she worked at Mercy.”

“She transferred paperwork.”

“She lied.”

Vivienne nodded.

“Like everyone else.”

Marcus stepped backward.

Charles spoke.

“Anna contacted me once.”

Marcus turned.

“What?”

Charles looked ashamed.

“About the boy.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

“What did she say?”

“That Victor intended to destroy the remaining records.”

Marcus’s face tightened.

“And you did nothing.”

“I sent money.”

Marcus laughed.

“Money?”

“To help her leave.”

“She already had Eli?”

Charles nodded.

Marcus looked like he had been struck.

“You knew my son might be connected to this.”

“I suspected.”

“And you let me raise him without telling me?”

Charles’s voice became quiet.

“I believed it might protect him.”

Marcus crossed the space between them.

He struck Charles squarely across the jaw.

Charles fell against the table.

No one stopped Marcus.

Daniel understood why.

Marcus stared down at him.

“You don’t protect people.”

“You hide them.”

Charles touched his bleeding lip.

“Yes.”

Marcus turned away.

Daniel looked at Vivienne.

“If Anna killed Reed, who killed Anna?”

Vivienne’s expression changed.

“Victor.”

Marcus slowly turned.

Vivienne continued.

“Anna wanted out.”

“She threatened to tell you everything.”

“My father could not allow that.”

Marcus’s voice became hollow.

“Her car accident.”

Vivienne nodded.

“Wasn’t an accident.”

Marcus sat down.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Elena stepped toward him.

Despite everything, her voice softened.

“Marcus.”

He looked up.

“If Eli is my child…”

She swallowed.

“He is still yours too.”

Marcus stared at her.

She continued.

“You held him when he was sick.”

“You stayed awake when he was scared.”

“You were there for birthdays.”

“School.”

“Nightmares.”

“That doesn’t disappear because of blood.”

Marcus looked down.

Daniel felt something inside him twist.

Elena was comforting the man who might have unknowingly raised her stolen son.

That told Daniel exactly what kind of woman she was.

And exactly how cruelly everyone had treated her.

Marcus’s radio crackled.

An officer spoke.

“We found the vehicle.”

Marcus stood instantly.

“Location?”

“County Route Fourteen.”

“Occupants?”

“Empty.”

Marcus grabbed his coat.

Daniel followed.

They drove forty minutes.

The abandoned SUV sat near an old church.

One rear door was open.

A child’s sneaker lay on the road.

Marcus ran to it.

He picked it up.

His face broke.

“Eli.”

Daniel crouched.

On the inside of the shoe, a name was written in marker.

ELI H.

Marcus pressed it against his chest.

Elena looked toward the church.

“Someone is inside.”

A faint light flickered behind stained glass.

Daniel moved toward the doors.

Marcus drew his weapon.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I go first.”

They entered.

The church was empty.

Candles burned near the altar.

A small backpack sat in the center aisle.

Marcus recognized it.

He ran.

“Eli!”

Nothing.

Daniel checked behind the pews.

Elena moved toward the altar.

“There’s something here.”

A phone.

It began ringing.

Marcus answered.

“Where is my son?”

A distorted voice replied.

“Which one of you is asking?”

Marcus froze.

Daniel stepped beside him.

The voice continued.

“Marcus Hale?”

“Or Daniel Whitmore?”

Elena’s face tightened.

“Put Eli on.”

A pause.

Then a boy’s voice.

“Dad?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Eli.”

“I’m okay.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know.”

Someone took the phone away.

The distorted voice returned.

“You want the boy?”

“Yes.”

“Bring Charles Whitmore.”

Daniel looked toward Charles, who had arrived with police.

“What do you want with him?”

The voice laughed.

“Justice.”

Charles had gone pale.

Daniel saw it.

“You recognize the voice.”

Charles shook his head.

The caller continued.

“Midnight tomorrow.”

“Whitmore Tower.”

“Top floor.”

“One person brings Charles.”

“No police.”

Marcus shouted.

“If you hurt Eli—”

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Charles.

“Who wants you dead?”

Charles gave a bitter smile.

“The list is long.”

Then the church speakers crackled.

Everyone looked up.

A recording began playing.

A woman’s voice.

Weak.

Terrified.

Daniel had never heard it before.

Elena had.

She went white.

“Rachel.”

The recording continued.

“If anyone finds this…”

“If something happens to me…”

“Charles Whitmore knows the truth.”

A pause.

“And Daniel…”

Daniel froze.

Rachel’s recorded voice became quieter.

May you like

“You are not the father of those children.”

Every person in the church stopped moving.
