Chapter 82 - The Agreement Nobody Was Supposed to FindThe following morning, I called Daniel.

He arrived at the lodge before noon.

When I showed him Victoria's document, he stared at it for several seconds.

Then he sat down.

"Where did she get this?"

"That's what we're asking you."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"I thought this agreement had been destroyed."

"Why?"

"Because your father and Eleanor terminated it."

Michael leaned forward.

"Then why does your signature appear on it?"

Daniel looked embarrassed.

"Because I witnessed the original arrangement."

I placed the paper on the table.

"Explain everything."

Daniel took a deep breath.

Years before the lodge became the center of our family disputes, Eleanor had invested money in a mountain development project.

The original plan involved a small resort, several private cabins, and an improved road.

My father had been responsible for managing the land.

However, the project was eventually abandoned after environmental concerns were raised.

Eleanor wanted her investment returned.

Dad agreed to repay her, but the financial arrangement had become complicated.

"The northern spring was included as collateral," Daniel explained.

I stared at him.

"Was it legally transferred?"

"No. It was only mentioned in the investment agreement."

"Then why does Victoria believe she has rights?"

"Because the agreement contained a clause allowing the beneficiary to request a review if the original investment was never fully repaid."

Michael examined the document.

"Was it repaid?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your father paid Eleanor back over several years."

"Then why wasn't the agreement formally canceled?"

Daniel looked down.

"Because Eleanor refused to sign the final release."

I felt anger rising.

"Why?"

"She believed your father owed her something else."

"What?"

Daniel hesitated.

"An opportunity."

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

"She wanted the lodge to become a community property trust. Your father wanted to keep it in the family. They disagreed."

I stood.

"So this entire time, someone has believed they were entitled to our land because Dad and Eleanor argued about how it should be used?"

"That's not the whole story."

Daniel reached into his bag and removed another document.

It was a letter from Dad.

I have repaid every dollar Eleanor invested. The lodge is no longer part of any business arrangement. If Victoria ever returns, explain that her mother chose to walk away.

I read the sentence twice.

"Did Eleanor choose to walk away?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why is Victoria here?"

"I don't know."

Helen arrived shortly afterward.

She examined both documents and advised us to request the original corporate records.

But before she could finish, Rebecca called.

Her voice sounded frightened.

"Something happened at the bookstore."

I immediately stood.

"What?"

"Someone broke into the storage room last night. They took my father's notebooks."

"Were you hurt?"

"No. But they left something behind."

"What?"

"A photograph of your father."

She paused.

"On the back, someone wrote that I should stop looking into the Whitmore agreement."

I closed my eyes.

This was no longer a simple property dispute.

Someone was trying to intimidate the people who could explain the past.

Helen advised Rebecca to report the break-in immediately.

We also arranged additional security at the lodge.

That evening, Eleanor called.

Her voice was weak.

"I need to see you."

"Victoria came here."

"I know."

"Why didn't you tell me about the investment agreement?"

"I was ashamed."

"Of what?"

"Of what I allowed your father to do."

I waited.

Then she whispered:

"Your father didn't repay me with money alone. He transferred something else."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"The original community trust."

I stared at the phone.

"What community trust?"

Eleanor began crying.

"The one your father created before you were born. The trust that protected the spring and the surrounding families."

I looked at Helen.

She immediately began taking notes.

"Where is the original document?"

Eleanor's voice became barely audible.

"Victoria has it."

The call ended.

And for the first time, I understood why Victoria had come to the lodge.

May you like

She wasn't trying to buy the land.

She believed she already owned something our family had never known existed.
