Chapter 66 - The Night the Lodge Went DarkWe returned to the lodge before sunset.

I told everyone about Daniel's phone call.

Mom became visibly distressed, while Olivia insisted that we should contact the police immediately.

Helen agreed.

She advised us to preserve every message, avoid meeting Daniel alone, and secure the original documents.

Michael placed the papers inside a locked case.

For several hours, everything seemed normal.

Jason prepared dinner with Olivia, and the children played near the fireplace. Mom sat quietly beside the window, watching the snowfall.

But I couldn't relax.

Daniel's warning kept repeating in my mind.

You may never understand why your father was really protecting this family.

At eleven forty-three, the lights went out.

The entire lodge disappeared into darkness.

A second later, the security alarm sounded.

Michael grabbed a flashlight.

"Everyone stay inside!"

I reached for my phone.

There was no signal.

Then came a loud crash from the workshop.

"Michael!"

He appeared near the hallway.

"The workshop window is broken."

We moved carefully toward the back of the house.

Cold air entered through the shattered glass. Drawers had been pulled open, papers were scattered across the floor, and the old workbench had been overturned.

Someone had searched the room.

I checked the locked case.

It was still there.

But the small envelope Dad had hidden behind the drawer was missing.

My stomach tightened.

They hadn't been looking for the bank records.

They had been looking for something else.

Olivia appeared behind us.

"Should I call the police?"

Michael finally found a signal near the front porch and made the call.

While we waited, I examined the security system.

The cameras had stopped recording eleven minutes before the power failure.

Someone had deliberately disabled them.

Then I noticed a small object near the broken window.

A silver cufflink.

It was expensive, with a distinctive black stone.

Michael picked it up.

"Someone dropped this."

Mom came downstairs wearing her robe.

When she saw the broken window, she began shaking.

"He said he would never let this happen."

I turned toward her.

"Who?"

She looked at the cufflink.

"Daniel."

I stared at her.

"How do you know?"

"Your father had a pair just like that. Daniel gave them to him years ago."

Michael examined the object.

"That doesn't prove Daniel was here."

Mom lowered her eyes.

"No. But I know his habits. He always wore those cufflinks when he wanted people to believe he was important."

Before I could ask another question, my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

I answered.

"You have something that belongs to me," a man's voice said.

"Who is this?"

"Someone who would prefer that your family remain safe."

"Did you break into our workshop?"

A pause.

"Your father made a promise he couldn't keep."

"That isn't an answer."

"Tomorrow, you will receive an offer. Accept it, and this problem ends."

The call disconnected.

I stood motionless.

Michael approached.

"Was it Caldwell?"

"I don't know."

Helen arrived with the police shortly afterward.

The officers photographed the damage and collected the cufflink.

They also advised us to remain cautious until the investigation progressed.

After everyone had gone upstairs, I sat alone beside the fireplace.

Mom joined me.

"There is something I should have told you years ago."

I turned.

"What?"

She took my hand.

"Daniel didn't disappear because he was afraid of Caldwell alone. He disappeared because your father discovered that Daniel had signed another document."

"What document?"

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

"A document involving me."

Before she could explain, a car stopped outside.

Headlights swept across the windows.

Someone stepped out.

And a folded envelope was pushed beneath the front door.
