Chapter 67 - The Brother Who Came BackMichael retrieved the envelope while I watched through the window.

There was no return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Dad standing beside Daniel outside a bank.
On the back were four words.
Ask him about the signature.
Mom recognized the photograph immediately.
"That was the day your father discovered everything."
I turned toward her.
"What signature?"
She looked at the floor.
"Daniel had forged your father's authorization on a business document."
Michael frowned.
"Was it connected to the property?"
"I don't know. Your father never explained everything."
The following afternoon, Daniel arrived.
He stood at the edge of the porch holding an old leather bag.
He looked nothing like the man in Dad's photographs. His hair had turned almost completely white, his face was thinner, and he walked with a slight limp.
I opened the door but didn't invite him inside.
"You have a lot of explaining to do."
He nodded.
"I know."
"Did you send someone to break into the workshop?"
"No."
"Did you threaten Mom?"
His expression changed.
"I warned you because Caldwell is dangerous. I never threatened her."
"Then why did you disappear?"
Daniel looked toward the mountains.
"Because I was afraid of what I had done."
"That's not good enough."
He lowered his head.
"No. It isn't."
Michael stepped onto the porch.
"If you want us to believe you, start with the money."
Daniel opened his bag and removed a thick folder.
"I received money from Caldwell. I was supposed to convince your father to sign the original loan agreement. I told myself it was a commission for introducing two businessmen."
He looked directly at me.
"But I knew the arrangement was dangerous."
My anger sharpened.
"You knew Dad was risking the lodge?"
"Yes."
"And you let him do it?"
"I thought I could reverse the situation later. When the business collapsed, Caldwell threatened to expose the payments and accuse me of fraud."
"So you ran."
Daniel nodded.
"I left everyone behind."
Mom appeared in the doorway.
"Your brother searched for you for years."
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"I know."
He handed me the folder.
Inside were bank transfers, letters, and a signed statement describing the arrangement.
One document immediately caught my attention.
It was an amended property agreement dated three months after Dad's original loan repayment.
The signature at the bottom looked like my father's.
But something was wrong.
I had seen his handwriting thousands of times.
This signature wasn't his.
"Who forged this?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Caldwell's company."
"Can you prove it?"
"I have the original correspondence and the notary's records."
I examined the papers.
"Why bring this now?"
Daniel looked toward Mom.
"Because Caldwell found out I still had copies. He has been searching for me for years."
"Why should we trust you?"
"You shouldn't. Not yet. Verify everything."
For the first time, I saw something in his expression that resembled genuine shame.
"I abandoned your father when he needed me most. I cannot undo that."
Mom began crying.
Daniel stepped toward her, but she raised one hand.
"Don't ask me to forgive you today."
He stopped.
"I won't."
I looked through the folder again.
There was another document.
A payment receipt bearing Mom's name.
My stomach tightened.
"What's this?"
Daniel looked away.
"That's the document I was trying to explain."
Before he could continue, his phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His face went white.
"Caldwell."
He answered.
A man's voice came through loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"You should have stayed gone, Daniel."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I have the documents."
"You have copies."
"I have enough to expose you."
Caldwell laughed.
"Then perhaps you should tell them what you did with Margaret's signature."
Mom covered her mouth.
Daniel disconnected.
I turned toward him.
"What does he mean?"
Daniel looked at me with exhausted honesty.
"Your mother signed something she never understood. And I helped Caldwell use it."
The room became completely silent.
