Chapter 30 - The Digital Lockbox

"Step away from the ledge, Daniel," Julian commanded, his thumb hovering over the activation switch of the satellite transmitter. "One push of this button initiates a remote wipe protocol that will scrub every secondary ledger from our overseas accounts. The federal investigators will get a handful of empty folders, the firm will settle out of court for a minor administrative fine, and life will go on. And you... you and your little family will go back to being quiet, forgotten footnotes in corporate history."

I looked at the blinking green light, then down at Celeste, who was shivering on the wet wood, and finally at Daniel’s profile—resolute, unyielding, and fiercely protective.

We hadn't survived the federal raid, the hospital vigil, and the betrayal of the entire Vance family to let a corporate lawyer walk away with the final piece of the puzzle.

"He's bluffing," I whispered to Daniel, my voice steady. "If he could scrub the servers remotely, he wouldn't have driven all the way down here to stop Celeste from talking."

Daniel’s eyes flicked to mine, and in that split second, our minds locked onto the exact same realization. Julian wasn't here to wipe the servers—he was here to download the final encryption keys before the federal warrant reached the Cayman branch at sunset.

Before Julian’s thumb could depress the activation switch, Daniel lunged forward with explosive speed, tackling the attorney around the waist just as the small device slipped from his fingers.

The satellite transmitter clattered across the wet wooden planks, skittering toward the edge of the pier and tumbling directly into the dark, churning waters of Boston Harbor.

"No!" Julian roared, shoving Daniel back with a burst of frantic strength. He swung his fist, catching Daniel across the jaw and sending him stumbling onto the wet gravel.

Before Julian could lunge again, the wailing shriek of sirens pierced the damp air behind the warehouse. A pair of federal black-and-whites with flashing strobe lights tore around the corner of the brick structure, their high beams pinning Julian against the side of his sedan.

"Federal agents! Drop your hands where we can see them!" Investigator Harris’s voice boomed through a megaphone from the lead cruiser, echoing off the historic brick walls.

Julian froze, his hands slowly rising into the air as two armed federal marshals spilled out of the cruisers, their badges gleaming under the strobing red and blue lights.

As Julian was pushed against the hood of the car and slapped with federal cuffs, Harris walked briskly over to us, looking us up and down with genuine concern. "Are you two alright?"

"We're fine, Investigator," Daniel said, wiping a streak of rain and mud from his cheek as he took my hand again. He pointed toward the water where the satellite transmitter had vanished. "You might want to deploy the marine unit. The encryption keys to the Cayman servers are sitting at the bottom of the slip."

Harris smiled grimly, nodding toward her team. "Already on it, Daniel. The marine divers have been tracking Julian’s secondary IP address since noon. His remote wipe failed the moment you knocked that device out of his hand."

Ten minutes later, as the cold rain finally began to ease into a gentle, misty drizzle, we stood watching the federal convoy escort Julian and Celeste away toward the federal detention center. The dark silhouette of the Boston skyline twinkled across the harbor, no longer a symbol of corporate dread, but a city finally clearing out its darkest corners.

We got back into our sedan, the heater blowing warm air against our damp coats as Daniel turned the ignition.

"Home?" he asked, looking over at me with a tired, genuine smile.

May you like

I leaned my head back against the seat, feeling the profound, unbreakable warmth of our family waiting for us on Beacon Hill.

"Home," I whispered.
