Chapter 26 - The Boardroom Surrender

The rain began to drum a steady, rhythmic tattoo against the tall glass windows of the Vance Financial corporate tower by Thursday morning. We had barely slept, the adrenaline of the federal depositions and Eleanor’s ledger keeping Daniel and me wide awake through the quiet hours of the night. But as we stepped out of the private elevator on the forty-second floor, every trace of fatigue vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity.

Arthur Vance’s executive assistant didn't look up immediately when we approached the double mahogany doors. When she finally raised her eyes and recognized Daniel standing beside me, her breath caught. She scrambled for her desk phone, her fingers trembling as she reached for the intercom.

"Tell Arthur we’re coming in," Daniel said, his voice entirely devoid of the nervous hesitation that had characterized his dealings with his uncle a week ago. "He can invite his corporate counsel or he can sit there alone, but either way, those doors are opening right now."

Before she could stammer a reply, Daniel pushed past the mahogany barrier and swung the heavy doors open.

Arthur Vance sat at the head of the massive quartz conference table, looking ten years older than he had at the holiday gala. His tailored charcoal suit hung loosely on his frame, and a half-empty tumbler of scotch sat neglected beside a stack of emergency board resolutions. Two corporate attorneys from the firm’s external legal representation sat flanking him, looking equally grim.

"Daniel. Grace," Arthur rasped, clearing his throat and forcing a mask of grandfatherly authority onto his face. "You shouldn't be here. The federal receivership committee hasn't cleared this floor for—"

"Save it, Arthur," I interrupted, stepping fully into the room and letting the heavy doors click shut behind us. "We didn't come here for a corporate briefing. We came to watch you sign the unconditional resignation papers before Special Investigator Harris enters this building with the rest of Eleanor’s evidence."

Arthur’s face went chalk white. He looked from Daniel to me, his eyes darting toward the briefcase in Daniel's hand. "Eleanor... she spoke with you."

"She gave us the 2023 audit overrides with Robert’s original signature and your initialed compliance waivers," Daniel said, walking slowly toward the head of the table and placing the canvas satchel squarely on the glass surface. He didn't sit down. He stood tall, looking down at the man who had traded his nephew's future for quarterly profit margins. "You knew Robert was siphoning those accounts long before Celeste ever touched a keyboard. You let him build the trap, and when the federal audit hit, you tried to throw my family under the bus to save your own legacy."

One of Arthur’s attorneys leaned forward, clearing his throat sharply. "Mr. Vance, anything you say in front of these individuals can and will be used—"

"Shut up, Julian," Arthur snapped, pressing his palms flat against the quartz table and staring up at Daniel. His hands were shaking visibly. He looked around the empty, silent boardroom—the citadel of power he had spent forty years building—and realized the walls had finally caved in. "If I sign the resignation and cede complete voting control to the federal receivership... what happens to the family name?"

"The family name was destroyed the moment you and Robert decided to treat human lives like disposable assets on a balance sheet," I said quietly, stepping closer to the table. "Sign the papers, Arthur. It’s the last merciful choice you have left."
