Chapter 20 - The First Sunrise

The next morning, the apartment on Beacon Hill felt entirely different than it had when we left it a week ago to race toward the hospital. The early dawn light filtered softly through the lace curtains of the nursery, painting pale gold patterns across the freshly painted white crib and the stack of unread baby books waiting on the wooden shelf.
The front door clicked open softly, and Daniel walked in carrying the lightweight infant car seat, while I followed closely behind carrying our diaper bag and the discharge paperwork neatly folder inside a blue hospital envelope.
We had spent the last hour saying goodbye to the nurses and doctors on Ward 3, walking down the long corridor where we had spent so many sleepless, terrified nights pacing the linoleum. But walking out of those glass doors this time wasn't an escape—it was a return.
Daniel set the car seat gently down on the nursery rug, unbuckling the safety harness with practiced care. He lifted Noah into his arms, cradling the baby close against his chest as he stood up and looked around the quiet, sunlit room.
"Welcome home, little guy," Daniel whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of Noah's soft, dark hair.
I walked over, wrapping my arms around Daniel's waist and resting my cheek against his shoulder as we both looked down at our son. The corporate world we had left behind felt like a lifetime away—a distant, chaotic noise from a different dimension that could no longer reach us here.
My phone rested silently on the dresser, its screen dark. No emergency board memos, no masked VPN text messages, no threatening offshore transfer alerts. Just the quiet, steady breathing of our newborn son and the solid, unyielding warmth of my husband standing beside me.

"What do we do now?" Daniel asked softly, turning his gaze from Noah to look down into my eyes, a faint, teasing smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Now," I said, smiling back as the morning sun finally crested over the Boston rooftops and flooded the nursery with golden light, "we figure out how to live a normal life."
