Chapter 18 - Grace Refuses the Payoff

At noon the following day, Grace sat inside a private booth at an upscale downtown bistro. Sitting across from her was Arthur Sterling—not the therapist, but Arthur Vance, the senior managing partner of the premier family law firm representing Victoria’s dynastic family.

Vance wore a thousand-dollar bespoke suit, his silver hair immaculate. He slid an ivory envelope across the linen tablecloth.

"Inside this envelope is a certified bank draft for two million dollars, Grace," Vance began, speaking in the smooth, measured cadence of a man who believed every human being had an expiration price. "Along with a fully funded scholarship to any medical program in North America. You could be a physician without a cent of debt."

Grace didn't touch the envelope. She kept her hands folded neatly in her lap, her eyes fixed on Vance’s impassive face. "And what does Victoria want in return for two million dollars, Mr. Vance?"

"A simple sworn affidavit," Vance said smoothly, buttering a warm roll. "Stating that your original testimony was exaggerated due to personal animosity. That you misunderstood disciplinary techniques common in high-stress parenting. You withdraw your video logs. You walk away, Grace. You secure your future, and a mother gets her daughter back."

Grace stared at the envelope, then looked directly into Vance's eyes. A cold, quiet fire burned in her chest.

"When I was seventeen," Grace said, her voice clear and razor-sharp, "I watched my mother work three jobs to pay for insulin while the wealthy family she cleaned for threw away catered buffets every weekend. I learned early that people like you and Victoria think money can wash blood off marble."

Vance’s expression hardened. "Do not be foolish, young lady. Two million dollars is more than you will earn in thirty years of nursing."

"And a child's soul is worth more than every dime your client inherited," Grace replied fiercely.

She reached into her coat pocket, pulled out her smartphone, and laid it face-up on the table. The screen showed an active audio recording that had been running for twenty-two minutes.

Vance's face drained of color. "You cannot record this! This is privileged settlement negotiation!"

"I am not a party to your lawsuit, Mr. Vance," Grace countered, picking up her phone and standing up. "I am a subpoenaed witness in a criminal child endangerment proceeding. Attempting to bribe a state witness is a felony in this state. Keep your envelope. You’re going to need that two million dollars for Victoria’s bail."
