Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Boardroom

By 4:00 AM, the penthouse suite had been transformed into a high-tech fortress. Five armed private security operators in plain clothes stood stationed at every access point, while Nathaniel paced in front of a wall of encrypted digital monitors.
Eleanor Sterling sat on the velvet sofa wrapped in a cashmere shawl, her aristocratic face drained of color as she stared at the desecrated signet ring.
"Thomas’s grave was disturbed," Eleanor murmured, her voice frail but trembling with fury. "The cemetery director called twenty minutes ago. The Sterling family mausoleum in Westchester... the bronze door was blown off its hinges. The vault was cracked open."
"Who hated your family enough to dig up a dead man?" Rose asked, her fingers digging into the arms of her chair. She had tried calling Leo twenty times. His phone went straight to voicemail. His dorm room at Columbia University was empty; his roommate claimed Leo had stepped out around midnight after receiving an urgent message from 'Sterling Logistics' regarding an emergency scholarship update.
"It’s not just hatred, Rose. It’s a coup," Nathaniel said coldly, slamming a leather-bound corporate dossier onto the coffee table. "Victoria wasn't acting alone when she tried to push my mother over that parapet. She was merely the pampered puppet."
"What do you mean?" Rose’s gaze narrowed.
Nathaniel pulled up an archival photograph on the central monitor. It showed a sharp-featured man with eyes the color of winter frost, standing beside Nathaniel's late father twenty-five years ago. The resemblance to Nathaniel was uncanny, yet twisted by an unmistakable malice.
"Julian Sterling," Eleanor whispered, her knuckles whitening around her porcelain teacup. "My husband’s younger brother. Twenty years ago, Thomas caught Julian embezzling billions through shell companies in Zurich. Thomas stripped him of his shares, wiped his name from the Sterling charter, and had him exiled under a non-disclosure agreement with a multi-million-dollar bounty on his head if he ever stepped foot on American soil."
"We thought Julian was rotting in a federal prison in Panama," Nathaniel added, his jaw set like stone. "Interpol reported him dead three years ago after a prison fire. But look at this."
He tapped a key. A surveillance freeze-frame flashed onto the screen. It was taken at 1:15 AM outside Columbia University’s north gate.
A sleek black Maybach with diplomatic plates was idling at the curb. Stepping out of the vehicle was an older man with silver hair, an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, and a polished silver walking cane. Beside him, two men in tactical gear were guiding a disoriented young man into the backseat.
"Leo!" Rose cried out, surging to her feet. "That's Leo! He drugged him!"
"Julian didn't die in Panama," Nathaniel growled, his eyes burning with lethal intent. "He faked his demise, waited until Victoria’s trial paralyzed our public stock, and bought up our shorted debt through European proxy accounts. Now he's back in New York. And he knows that the easiest way to break me... is to bleed the woman I would burn down the world to protect."
Suddenly, the phone on the glass coffee table buzzed.
A blocked caller ID.
Nathaniel reached for it, but Rose’s scarred hand caught his wrist. Her fear was gone, replaced by a cold, deadly clarity that surprised even Eleanor.

"Put it on speaker," Rose commanded. "He wants me. Let him hear the maid who ruined his master plan."
