Chapter 10 - The Vault of Shadows

Within twenty minutes, the Sterling private medical team had evacuated Eleanor to an underground bunker beneath the Sterling Tower, confirming that the penthouse’s water filtration system had been spiked with a low-grade military neurotoxin.

Rose stood in Nathaniel’s private elevator as it descended deep beneath the bedrock of Wall Street, sixty floors beneath the financial district.

"The Swiss treasury key isn't a digital file," Nathaniel explained grimly, watching the digital floor counter drop. "It’s a physical encryption cipher created by my grandfather. It requires two distinct genetic keys—my blood, and the original signet ring Julian stole from my father’s grave."

"Which means Julian can't open the vault alone," Rose realized, her mind racing. "He has the ring. But he needs you."

"He needs my thumbprint and my retinal scan," Nathaniel confirmed. "Which means Leo is the bait to lure me into a room where Julian can harvest them."

The elevator chimed, opening into a subterranean vault of brushed titanium and reinforced concrete. Standing inside the sterile room was Marcus Vance—the chief legal counsel of the Sterling Empire, a man who had served the family for thirty years.

"Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling," Marcus bowed his head, his hands trembling as he held a leather portfolio. "We’ve detected abnormal trading volume. Someone is dumping millions of Sterling shares on the Hong Kong exchange. By morning, the stock could crash forty percent. If Julian executes a hostile takeover with the unlocked Swiss treasury, the board will have no choice but to vote Nathaniel out as CEO."

"We aren't giving him the cipher," Rose stated flatly.

Marcus adjusted his gold-rimmed spectacles, glancing nervously at Nathaniel. "With respect, madam... the young man’s life is at stake. The police cannot breach Julian’s suspected hideout. The address traced from that satellite phone is the Consular Residence of the Principality of Veridia. It has full diplomatic immunity. NYPD cannot cross the perimeter without causing an international incident."

"Diplomatic immunity protects diplomats," Rose said, stepping into the center of the vault, her gaze gleaming with cold fury. "It doesn't protect service staff."

Nathaniel turned to her, his brow furrowing in sudden realization and dread. "Rose, no. Absolutely not."

"Listen to me, Nathaniel!" Rose seized his lapels, pulling him down until their eyes met. "Julian expects you to send a tactical strike team, or show up with the cipher to negotiate like an oligarch. He knows every military contractor you employ. But he doesn't know the service industry."

"You are my wife!" Nathaniel shouted, his composure shattering. "I didn't marry you to send you back into the fire! If I lose you—"

May you like

"You won't lose me," Rose whispered fiercely, pressing her scarred palm against his cheek. "For five years, I worked for the elite catering agencies that staff every diplomatic gala in this city. Tomorrow night, the Veridian Consulate is hosting an invite-only banquet for European investors. Julian is the guest of honor. He needs kitchen staff, servers, wine stewards. They don't look at our faces, Nathaniel. To men like Julian Sterling, the staff are invisible. And that makes us invisible ghosts."
