Chapter 7 - Showdown in the Loop

The wind howling off Lake Michigan whipped viciously around the glass facade of the forty-story skyscraper housing Apex Shield in downtown Chicago.

Special Agent Miller, flanked by four federal tactical agents and me, stepped out of the private elevator onto the top-floor executive suite. The offices were dead silent. The sleek mahogany desks, minimalist art installations, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a frozen Chicago skyline felt entirely surreal.

At the far end of the open-plan executive suite, standing behind a massive glass desk with his laptop open and a titanium briefcase resting on the floor, was Marcus.

He looked up as our boots echoed sharply against the polished concrete floor. His bespoke Italian suit was rumpled, his hair slightly disheveled, and his eyes wide with a manic, desperate panic.

“Marcus Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Agent Miller announced, drawing her service weapon and holding it at a low ready. “Step away from the console with your hands visible.”

Marcus stared at Agent Miller, then his gaze shifted directly to me. A bitter, twisted sneer crept across his face.

“Michael,” Marcus laughed, a hollow, echoing sound that carried through the empty floor. “You just couldn't mind your own damn business, could you? I built an empire. I secured multi-million-dollar government contracts with the Department of Defense. I had everything under complete control, and you had to come sniffing around like a stray dog.”

“You didn't build an empire, Marcus,” I said, stepping forward past the agents, my voice steady and cold. “You built a cage of lies, and you tortured a five-year-old child to feed your own sickness.”

Marcus lunged toward his titanium briefcase on the floor, his hand diving inside toward a hidden compartment.

“Stop right there!” Agent Miller roared.

Before Marcus could pull out whatever was inside the case, federal tactical agents swarmed him from both sides. Two agents tackled him to the concrete floor, pinning his arms behind his back with plastic zip-ties as he thrashed and screamed in fury.

“You can’t touch me!” Marcus yelled, his face pressed against the cold floor. “I know judges! I know federal prosecutors! My lawyers will have me out by midnight!”

May you like

“Your lawyers can't do anything for you in a federal supermax prison, Marcus,” Agent Miller said calmly, snapping the final restraint into place. “You’re facing multiple counts of aggravated child exploitation, federal wire fraud, corporate extortion, and interstate trafficking.”

As federal agents hauled Marcus up to his feet and led him toward the elevators in heavy restraints, he glared at me one final time, his eyes burning with absolute hatred. I didn't flinch. I watched him go until the elevator doors slid shut, sealing his fate forever.
