Chapter 29 - THE CONFESSION ON LIVE TELEVISION

On the windswept rooftop of Vance Tower, the downdraft of the helicopter’s twin rotor blades was deafening.
Victoria was scrambling toward the open passenger door of the AgustaWestland, screaming at the pilot to lift off.
"Take off! Take off now, you idiot!" she shrieked, hauling herself into the leather seat.
Suddenly, the helicopter’s engine whine sputtered and died.
The pilot held his hands up in surrender, pointing toward the forward cockpit glass. Ethan stood on the nose of the helicopter, holding an emergency manual fuel-shutoff valve he had just severed from the external fuselage.
Victoria turned pale. She pulled a nickel-plated snub-nosed revolver from her purse, her hands shaking violently. "Stay back! I will shoot you, Ethan! I swear on Julian’s grave I will shoot you!"
Ethan stepped down onto the rooftop tarmac, walking toward the open cabin door with steady, unhurried steps. The wind whipped his dark hair across his bruised forehead, but his eyes were pools of absolute stillness.
"Shoot me, Victoria," Ethan said, his voice cutting through the fading whine of the rotors. "Do it. Because that’s the only way you leave this roof."
Victoria raised the gun with both hands, aiming it at his chest. "I built this family! My money financed your father’s first acquisition! You and your brother were nothing without me!"
"You didn't build anything," Ethan said, now standing two feet from the barrel of her gun. "You fed on our family like a parasite. You murdered my brother. You tried to steal my daughter. And now, the entire world knows."
Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek black tablet computer, turning the screen toward her.
On the screen was a live national broadcast of CNN.
The anchor was reading breaking news beneath a chyron that blared: **VANCE TRUST FRAUD EXPOSED: ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED FOR VICTORIA VANCE & CHIEF JUSTICE MILLER.**
Playing on the corner of the screen was the audio file Vanessa had uploaded from the vault, complete with Victoria’s voice clearly confessing to Julian’s murder and the bribery scheme.
Victoria stared at the screen, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly. The revolver in her hand began to tremble.
"It’s over, Victoria," Ethan whispered. "There are no offshore accounts left. No corrupt judges. No private jets. You are just a murderer trapped on a roof."
Below them, the rooftop access doors burst open.
Dozens of federal tactical agents in full SWAT gear flooded the helipad, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting Victoria’s chest in crimson dots.
"Federal agents! Drop the weapon! Drop the weapon now!"
Victoria looked at the federal agents. She looked at Ethan’s unyielding face. The realization of complete, irreversible defeat crashed over her like a tidal wave.
The nickel-plated revolver slipped from her numb fingers, clattering onto the metal deck.
Two agents rushed forward, pulling her out of the helicopter, forcing her onto her knees, and ratcheting heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
As they dragged her toward the rooftop stairs, Victoria looked back at Ethan, her face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. "You think you won, little brother? You think this ends with me?"
Ethan didn't answer. He turned his back on her, walking toward the access doorway where Vanessa and Lily were waiting.
Lily broke away from Vanessa’s side, running across the rooftop as fast as her small legs could carry her. "Daddy!"
Ethan dropped to his knees, opening his arms, catching his daughter as she threw herself against his chest. He buried his face in her hair, breathing in the scent of her, feeling the rapid, terrified beat of her little heart slowly settling against his own.
"I’ve got you, baby," Ethan whispered, tears finally escaping his eyes and rolling down his bruised cheeks. "I’ve got you. Nobody is ever taking you away again."
Vanessa stepped up beside them, placing her hand gently on Ethan’s shoulder. Ethan looked up, reached out, and pulled Vanessa down into the embrace.
The three of them held each other on that high rooftop, surrounded by federal agents and the morning sun finally breaking through the heavy clouds, illuminating the sprawling city below.

The nightmare was finished. The family had survived.
Or so they believed.
