Chapter 26 - THE POISONED GALA

"Lower the weapon, Ethan," Victoria said softly, her European accent silky and dangerous. "If your trigger finger so much as twitches, my men will turn this vault into a slaughterhouse. And I do so hate the smell of cordite on my cashmere."
Ethan kept the iron sights of his Sig Sauer centered squarely between Victoria’s cold eyes. "You killed Julian."
"Julian was weak," Victoria replied without a shred of remorse, taking a slow step forward. "He had all the money in the Western world, yet he cried like an infant when I asked him to invest in my family’s transport shipping lines. He didn't understand that power isn't meant to sit in vaults, Ethan. Power is meant to be consumed."
Her gaze shifted over Ethan's shoulder to Vanessa, who stood tall, clutching the manila folder tightly against her chest.
"And you," Victoria sneered, her lips curling in disgust. "The little maid who thought she could crawl into a billionaire’s bed and claim an empire. Do you really believe that piece of paper in your hands will save you? Outside this bank, the city belongs to me. Chief Justice Miller has already convened an emergency closed-door hearing for nine o'clock this morning. By noon, Lily will be aboard my private Gulfstream bound for Zurich. And neither of you will ever see her again."
"Chief Justice Miller won't be convening anything," Ethan said calmly, not lowering his weapon an inch.
Victoria laughed, a high, mocking tinkle. "And who is going to stop him? You? A fugitive with an active federal arrest warrant?"
"No," Vanessa spoke up, stepping out from behind Ethan’s shoulder. Her voice was steady, ringing clear against the stainless-steel walls. "The press will."
Victoria’s laughter died instantly. Her eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
Vanessa raised the digital Dictaphone from the velvet tray. The red recording light was flashing, but beside it, a blue LED was rapidly pulsing.
"When we entered this vault," Vanessa explained, her eyes burning with fierce maternal defiance, "Ethan hooked the bank's auxiliary satellite relay to my burner phone. Every single word you spoke about killing Julian, about bribing Justice Miller, and about kidnapping Lily has just been uploaded to an unlisted cloud server directly connected to the legal desk of the New York Times and the FBI’s Public Corruption unit."
Victoria’s face drained of color. The aristocratic veneer cracked, revealing the snarling predator beneath. "Kill them!" she shrieked. "Kill them both and take the folder!"
Before the private security operators could shoulder their weapons, Ethan reacted.
He didn't fire at the men. He fired his weapon directly into the emergency Halon fire-suppression canister mounted on the vault ceiling!
*BOOM!*
High-pressure white chemical foam erupted violently, blinding the security team in a deafening hiss of pressurized gas.
"Down!" Ethan roared, grabbing Vanessa’s jacket and diving behind the massive stainless-steel inspection table.
Submachine-gun fire tore through the fog of Halon gas, ricocheting wildly off the metal deposit boxes in deafening clatter. Ethan returned fire through the white smoke—two shots, three shots—hearing the heavy thud of two operators collapsing to the limestone floor.
Ethan grabbed Vanessa’s hand, leading her through the blinding chemical haze toward the vault’s emergency ventilation shaft. He kicked the lower louvers free, shoved the manila folder into her jacket, and pushed her into the narrow escape duct.
"Go! Crawl to the storm drain!" Ethan yelled over the gunfire.
"Ethan, I’m not leaving you!" Vanessa cried, tears cutting through the chemical dust on her cheeks.
"I’m right behind you! Move!"
Vanessa scrambled into the duct. Ethan turned, emptied the remaining rounds of his magazine into the silhouettes emerging from the smoke, and pulled a flashbang grenade from his tactical belt. He yanked the pin, rolled it across the floor, and dived headfirst into the ventilation shaft.

A split second later, a blinding white explosion rocked the vault, followed by screams of disoriented agony from Victoria’s security team.
The family had escaped the vault. But as Ethan slid down the drainage pipe into the darkness of the subterranean tunnels, the roar of police sirens from the streets above signaled that their race against time had only just begun.
