Chapter 4: The Sound of the Siren

The muzzle of the Beretta trembled slightly, held by a hand driven entirely by sheer panic and megalomaniacal desperation. The storm outside roared louder, a jagged flash of lightning illuminating the grand hallway in a blinding stroke of white light, followed immediately by a deafening crash of thunder that rattled the windowpanes.

"Say goodbye, Liam," Evelyn whispered, her eyes wide, wild, and devoid of any human empathy. Her finger began to apply final pressure to the trigger.

Click.

The hammer fell, striking empty air. No gunshot rang out. No bullet pierced the quiet darkness of the hallway.

Evelyn blinked, staring down at the weapon in utter confusion. She pulled the trigger again. Click. Click. Nothing.

She looked up at Liam, whose expression hadn't changed by a single micro-expression. He took another unhurried sip of his scotch, the ice clinking softly against the crystal glass.

"Looking for this?" Liam asked smoothly.

With his free hand, he reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object—the magazine of the Beretta, loaded with nine pristine hollow-point bullets. He dropped it casually onto the marble floor, where it clattered noisily, spinning to a stop near Evelyn’s bare feet.

Evelyn stared at the magazine, her face turning the color of ash. The weapon slipped from her nerveless fingers, hitting the hard marble with a dull, heavy thud.

"You... you checked my safe," she choked out, her knees finally giving way. She slid down the wall until she was sitting on the floor again, shivering violently, the fierce veneer completely shattered into dust. "When? How?"

"While you were busy rehearsing your victim tears in front of the vanity mirror this afternoon," Liam said, his voice dropping all pretense of casual conversation, replaced by a cold, cutting authority. "You are predictable, Evelyn. People who build their lives on deceit always assume everyone else is just as stupid as the victims they exploit."

Before Evelyn could muster the strength to reply, the heavy front doors of the mansion were suddenly blown open by a gust of wind and a surge of heavy boots.

A team of federal agents in tactical gear, led by Vance and two local detectives, swarmed into the grand foyer. Red and blue emergency lights from the cruiser fleet parked outside flashed through the oversized windows, painting the walls in frantic, pulsing strokes of crimson and azure.

"Evelyn Sterling—or whatever your real maiden name happens to be," the lead detective announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, conspiracy, and the suspicious death of Thomas Vance."

Evelyn didn't fight. She didn't scream. She sat on the marble floor like a broken porcelain doll, her red hair falling across her face as the cold steel cuffs locked around her wrists. As the officers hauled her to her feet and led her past the majestic entryway, she didn't look at Liam. She stared straight ahead into the flashing lights of the police cruisers waiting to swallow her into the dark.

Liam stood motionless on the landing, watching her go. He finished the last drop of his scotch, set the crystal glass down on a side table, and let out a long, shuddering breath that felt like shedding a twenty-year-old coat of lead.

With justice finally served and the shadows of the past cleared away, what does the future hold for Liam and the quiet, courageous girl who started it all? Turn the page to the final chapter for a heartwarming and well-deserved happy ending.
