Chapter 3: Midnight in the Gilded Cage

The midnight storm broke over the estate with a vengeance. Heavy sheets of rain lashed against the reinforced glass of the master suite, turning the panoramic view of the city skyline into a blurry wash of neon lights and dark shadows. Inside the room, the atmosphere was thick with tension, smelling faintly of expensive French perfume and impending doom.

Evelyn stood in front of the walk-in dressing room mirror. She wasn't crying anymore. Tears were a luxury of the weak, and Evelyn was a survivor of the gutter who had clawed her way to the top by any means necessary. Her reflection showed a woman possessed—hair disheveled, eyes burning with a manic, crystalline light.

She opened the hidden floor safe tucked beneath the custom walnut shoe racks. Inside sat a heavy velvet box. She popped it open. Resting inside was a small, sleek, unregistered Beretta 9mm pistol—an insurance policy she had acquired years ago, just in case a husband like Thomas or Liam ever became inconvenient.

She slipped the firearm into the pocket of her silk robe, her heart hammering a frantic, erratic rhythm against her ribs. She knew the federal agents wouldn't arrive until dawn. Liam had given her until sunrise to pack a single suitcase and leave with whatever dignity she had left—or face immediate arrest by the authorities.

Leave? Evelyn thought bitterly, a dark, twisted smirk curling her lips. After everything I built? I don't think so.

She crept out of the dressing room, moving through the cavernous, darkened master suite like a ghost. The hallway outside was dimly lit by amber wall sconces. She needed to get to Liam’s private office on the ground floor. That was where he kept the physical master override keys to the corporate servers—the only thing that could unfreeze her accounts and give her the leverage she needed to flee the country.

As she descended the grand spiral staircase, each step was calculated and silent. The mansion felt massive, hollow, and threatening.

Suddenly, a floorboard creaked beneath her foot.

"I wouldn't go down there if I were you," a voice echoed from the shadows near the landing.

Evelyn gasped, spinning around. Liam stepped out from the corridor leading to the library. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing strong, corded forearms. He held a glass of dark amber scotch in his hand, swirling the ice cubes lazily.

"Liam," Evelyn breathed, her hand instinctively sliding deep into her robe pocket, her fingers wrapping around the cold, textured grip of the Beretta. "You really should learn to sleep. You're going to give yourself a heart attack."

"I sleep just fine when the trash has been taken out," Liam replied evenly, stopping ten feet away from her. He took a slow sip of his drink, his eyes never leaving hers. He could see the subtle bulge in her pocket. He could read the violent, desperate psychology of a cornered predator as clearly as if it were printed on a billboard. "You're packing light for someone who claims she's going to burn my empire down."

"I didn't pack light, Liam," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling slightly with adrenaline as she slowly pulled her hand—and the gun—out of her pocket, leveling the barrel directly at his chest. "I packed heavy."

The dark metal of the pistol gleamed menacingly under the amber wall lights.

Liam didn't flinch. He didn't drop his glass. He simply let out a low, humorless chuckle.

"A gun, Evelyn? Really?" Liam shook his head slowly. "You always did lack imagination. Do you honestly think pulling a trigger in a house wired with federal panic buttons and biometric security is going to save you?"

"It will save me if you're the only one left to tell the story," Evelyn snarled, her finger tightening on the trigger, her knuckles turning white.

With a gun pointed straight at his heart, does Liam have one final ace up his sleeve, or has the cunning billionaire finally pushed his luck too far? Turn the page to Chapter 4.
