Chapter 20 - The Key in the Floorboard

That evening, a summer thunderstorm rolled over Maplewood. Rain drummed against the tin roof of the back porch, steady and calming. The third riser didn't wobble when Brandon carried the toolbox down into the basement.

I followed him down the narrow wooden stairs, holding a mug of chamomile tea. The basement smelled of damp earth, old motor oil, and David’s cedar shavings—the smell of fifty years of an honest life.

Brandon was kneeling in front of David’s old heavy steel workbench, sweeping away decades of dust from the lower shelf.

"Mom," Brandon called out, his voice sounding strange, muffled by the low rafters. "Come look at this."

I walked over to the workbench. Brandon had pulled back an old, oil-soaked section of rubber floor mat beneath the heavy cast-iron legs. In the concrete foundation beneath it, David had chiseled out a neat, six-inch square compartment, covered by an unpainted iron plate held down with two brass machine screws.

Brandon unscrewed the plate. Inside sat a heavy, water-sealed green ammunition can from the Korean War.

Brandon’s hands trembled as he popped the spring-loaded metal latches. The rubber seal opened with a soft hiss of preserved air.

There was no money inside. There were no stock certificates or deed transfers.

Inside sat a thick, leather-bound journal, an old pair of transit driver's sunglasses, and a heavy brass safe deposit key bearing the stamped logo of the First National Bank of Chicago—a bank that hadn't operated in our state for thirty years.

Beneath the key lay an envelope addressed not to me, and not to Brandon.

The faded handwriting on the envelope belonged to David, but the name written across the front made my heart stop beating in my chest:

*To my daughter, Sarah. Open only if Richard Montgomery tries to take the house.*

Brandon looked up from the rusted box, his face pale, his eyes wide with shock.

"Mom..." Brandon whispered, his voice cracking against the rumble of thunder overhead. "Who is Sarah?"
