Chapter 16 - The Severing

The front door opened. Brandon walked out onto the porch, step by step, testing the cedar riser with every stride. It held firm beneath his weight.
Clara looked up, her expression shifting instantly from panic to manipulative pleading. "Brandon! Thank God! Tell these thugs to back off! They’re harassing me! Call the police!"
Brandon stopped at the edge of the porch steps. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't curse. He looked at Clara with a chilling clarity that can only come after an illusion has been entirely shattered.
"I called the police twenty minutes ago, Clara," Brandon said calmly. "To report the unauthorized use of my mother’s identity on the catering vendor guarantees at Rosewood Manor. I gave Detective Miller the digital audit trail."
Clara took a step back, her breath hitching in her throat. "What are you talking about? You agreed to help with the wedding expenses!"
"I agreed to pay what we could afford," Brandon said, pulling his wedding band off his left finger. The platinum ring gleamed in the gray morning light. "I didn't agree to let you forge my mother's signature on a venue indemnity contract. I didn't agree to let you put her in a closet while you drank champagne paid for with my father’s life insurance."
"You can't do this to me!" she yelled, her voice screeching into the quiet neighborhood street. "You have nothing! My father will blackball you from every corporate firm in the state! You’ll be back to driving a bus like your pathetic father!"
Frank Kowalski and the twelve union men took half a step forward in unison. The collective weight of their silence was heavier than any shout.

Brandon tossed the platinum ring onto the grass at Clara’s feet. It hit the dirt with a tiny, imperceptible thud.
"My father worked an honest job every day of his life," Brandon said. "He never stole a dollar, he never lied on an inspection report, and he never treated his family like trash. Get off my mother's lawn before the tow truck takes your Mercedes to the municipal impound lot."
