Chapter 8 - The Interrogation Room

The municipal detention facility in downtown San Francisco smelled of industrial floor stripper, cold metal, and stale instant coffee.
At 10:00 AM the following morning, I sat across a scarred steel table in Interrogation Room B. On the other side of the reinforced glass, two armed bailiffs stood guard in the fluorescent-lit corridor.
The door clicked open, and Genevieve was escorted in.
The transformation from the radiant woman on my terrace was complete. She wore an orange institutional jumpsuit that was two sizes too large, hanging limply on her frame. Her wrists were shackled to a chain looped around her waist. Her blonde hair was unwashed, pulled back into a messy ponytail. Her face was hollow, dark circles bruised beneath her eyes.
When she saw me sitting there, she stopped dead in her tracks. The bailiff nudged her shoulder, forcing her into the steel chair opposite me.
The guard stepped out and locked the door from the outside.
We sat in absolute silence for sixty seconds. The hum of the fluorescent tubes overhead was the only sound in the room.
"You came to gloat," she whispered finally. Her voice was cracked, stripped of all its melodic charm.
"I came to understand," I said honestly.
Genevieve let out a pathetic, dry rasp that might have been a laugh. "Understand what? How someone could look at you, smile at you, sleep next to you, and plan to rob you blind? You want me to tell you it was hard, James? You want me to tell you that somewhere deep down, I loved you?"
"Did you?" I asked.
She leaned forward, the heavy chains clinking sharply against the metal table. Her eyes locked onto mine—empty, bitter, and cold.
"I didn't feel anything for you," she spat, her words dripping with pure, concentrated venom. "Not on the first night in Monterey. Not when you gave me that two-carat diamond ring. Not when you talked about building a future together. You were a project. You were a line item on an extraction ledger. To me, you were just another arrogant, wealthy man who thought he could buy love because he was too boring to earn it."
I looked at her, searching for any trace of the woman I had planned to spend the rest of my life with. There was nothing. Just an empty vessel filled with resentment and greed.
"Victor Salazar was arrested at the Mendocino airstrip six hours ago," I told her quietly. "Arthur Vance is currently giving a full confession to the district attorney in exchange for protective custody. The Valmont Group’s accounts have been frozen internationally."
Genevieve flinched, the chains rattling as her shoulders hitched. "Arthur confessed?"
"To everything," I said. "He gave up your contracts. He gave up your previous extraction marks in London and Miami. The federal prosecutor is looking at twenty-five years for interstate wire fraud and syndicated racketeering. With no bail."
A single tear tracked down her pale, unwashed cheek, cutting a path through the grime. It was not a tear of remorse for what she had done to me. It was the pure, self-pitying terror of a criminal realizing the cell door had locked permanently.
"You ruined my life," she whispered, her voice shaking with rage.
"You ruined your own life the day you underestimated a six-year-old girl," I replied, standing up from the table. "You thought Amara was invisible because she didn't have money, because she didn't have power, because she was just a child in a pink dress holding a toy lamb. But she saw through you in twenty seconds. Something I couldn't do in eight months."
I knocked once on the heavy metal door. The bailiff unlocked it from the outside, the bolt throwing a heavy, final clatter through the room.
"James! Wait!" Genevieve screamed, lunging forward until the belly chains jerked her back violently against the steel chair. "James, please! Don't let them send me to federal prison! Call your lawyers! Tell them to reduce the charges! You loved me, James! You loved me!"
I walked through the door into the corridor without looking back.

The heavy steel door slammed shut behind me, cutting off her screams in an instant.
