Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Shadow

The silence that settled over the estate after the police cruisers drove away was not peaceful; it was hollow. It was the unnatural quiet of a bomb shelter after the blast wave has passed.

Dante walked onto the terrace twenty minutes later, his heavy black trench coat damp from the coastal fog. He held a manila folder in one hand and a secure tablet in the other. He didn't offer sympathy. Dante understood that sympathy was useless to a man who had just dismantled his own future.

"Salazar sang," Dante said, leaning his hip against the balustrade. "He gave up three encrypted partitions on his primary hard drive. But we have a complication, James."

I turned, my hands still thrust deep into my coat pockets. "What kind of complication?"

"Genevieve wasn't just an operative working for Salazar," Dante said, opening the folder and handing me a printout of corporate filing records. "Salazar was working for a syndicate. A consortium called the Valmont Group, out of Luxembourg. They've been buying distressed debt across three of your regional shipping subsidiaries over the last nine months."

I scanned the document under the dim terrace light. The names on the paper were shell companies—anonymous corporate fronts with addresses in Zug, Delaware, and Tortola. But the financial vectors were unmistakable. They had been accumulating debt notes specifically tied to the Sterling Maritime expansion project, waiting for a liquidity squeeze.

"The wedding wasn't just about draining my personal bank accounts," I realized, the cold reality hitting me like a physical blow. "It was an orchestrated takeover."

"Exactly," Dante said. "If Genevieve had secured joint operational control of the family holding trust, she was instructed to default on the maritime debt notes within ninety days. That default would have triggered an automatic debt-to-equity swap. The Valmont Group would have seized voting control of your father's entire shipping fleet before your board of directors could even convene an emergency meeting."

A slow, burning anger began to replace the cold shock that had gripped me all morning. This had never been a petty grift. It was a sophisticated, multi-layered corporate execution. If Amara hadn't whispered those words on the terrace, within six months I would have been stripped of my heritage, my wealth, and my family's legacy, tied up in litigation while a hostile European conglomerate dismantled everything my father had spent forty years building.

"Who runs Valmont?" I demanded.

"A man named Julian Vance," Dante replied.

I froze. "Vance? Any relation to Arthur Vance, my attorney?"

"Arthur Vance’s estranged half-brother," Dante said, his jaw tightening. "Arthur claims he hasn't spoken to Julian in fifteen years. But our digital forensics team is tearing through Arthur’s private communications right now. We need to be certain Arthur wasn't a willing participant in the breach."

"Bring Arthur in," I said, my voice hardening. "I want him in my study in thirty minutes. If he refuses, have the county sheriff escort him."

"Already on his way," Dante said. "He knows something went down. The moment the state registrar flagged the proxy injunction, Arthur’s office went dark."

I looked back out at the ocean. The fog was thickening, blotting out the stars, turning the water into an impenetrable void.

"And my sister Evelyn? Where are she and Amara?"

"I moved them to the downtown safe house two hours ago," Dante reassured me. "Two armed operatives on the door. No one knows that address except you and me. Amara is safe, James. She’s asleep."

"Keep the detail doubled," I instructed. "If Julian Vance was willing to deploy this level of capital and manpower to take the Sterling holdings, he isn't going to roll over just because Genevieve is sitting in a county holding cell."

"Understood," Dante nodded. "What's our next move?"

May you like

"We don't play defense anymore, Dante," I said, turning away from the railing and walking toward the house. "They targeted my family. They used a con artist to sleep in my bed and target my niece’s future. We find every asset Valmont owns on domestic soil. And we burn them to the ground."
