Chapter 8 - The Breach

The concussion of the blast tore through the ground floor, sending a cloud of pulverized drywall, splintered oak, and toxic smoke billowing up the staircase.

Marcus’s voice roared from the darkness below, followed immediately by the rapid, deafening staccato of gunfire: *BANG! BANG! BANG!*

*"FALL BACK! LEVEL TWO BREACH! FALL BACK TO THE STAIRWELL!"*

A flashbang grenade detonated in the foyer. A blinding magnesium flash illuminated the upstairs hallway through the balusters, followed by a high-frequency shockwave that caused Leah’s ears to ring with a piercing, paralyzing shriek. She fell onto her side, clutching her stomach, groaning in agony as another Braxton-Hicks contraction tore across her uterus.

"Leah! Get up! Up!" David was on his feet, pure animal instinct overriding the crushing shock of Martha’s revelation.

He didn't care about the Miller name. He didn't care about the eighty million dollars. He didn't care that his bloodline was a fabrication. The only reality that existed in the universe was the woman lying on the floor and the unborn child fighting for life inside her.

He grabbed Leah beneath her arms and dragged her into the master bathroom, kicking the heavy wooden door shut and throwing the newly installed reinforced steel bolt into place.

Downstairs, the gunfire ceased abruptly.

The silence that followed was heavier, more terrifying than the explosions.

"Marcus?" David yelled through the door. "Marcus!"

No answer. Only the wet, heavy thud of tactical boots walking slowly across the broken glass and debris of the foyer.

Then, the sound of heels.

*Click. Clack. Click. Clack.*

Deliberate. Elegant. Unhurried.

The sound of Italian leather pumps stepping over the carnage on the first floor.

"David?"

Evelyn’s voice drifted up the stairwell, clear and unimpeded by the ringing in their ears. It sounded terrifyingly cheerful, like a mother calling her young boy down for Sunday breakfast.

"David, sweetheart. Your little mercenaries were very expensive, but sadly quite predictable," she said, her heels beginning their ascent up the carpeted stairs. *One. Two. Three.* "Mr. Cole is currently resting in the garden. I don't think he’ll be waking up until tomorrow afternoon."

Leah pulled herself into the corner of the bathroom, wedged between the marble shower enclosure and the porcelain vanity. Her water had not broken, but the stress had triggered violent, regular contractions. She bit down on the sleeve of her cardigan to keep from screaming, her face drenched in cold, greasy sweat.

David stood in the center of the bathroom, the Mossberg shotgun raised to his shoulder, the barrel pointed dead-center at the wooden door.

"Don't come up here, Mother!" he shouted, his voice shaking with pure adrenaline. "I know everything! Martha Higgins called me! I know about Julian! I know about my father!"

The footsteps stopped on the top landing.

A brief, mocking silence hung in the air, broken only by the patter of the storm against the high skylight above the bathroom.

"Ah," Evelyn said smoothly from behind the thin wooden panel of the door. "Dear Martha. I always knew her Catholic guilt would catch up with her eventually. It’s of no consequence, darling. The cancer will take her before sunrise anyway."

"You're a monster," David whispered, his finger tightening against the curved metal of the trigger. "You murdered your own son."

"I protected what was mine!" Evelyn's voice suddenly cracked with a terrifying, venomous fury that stripped away thirty years of aristocratic polish. "Julian was weak! Just like his pathetic father! They didn't understand the discipline it takes to build an empire that outlasts generations! They thought money was meant to be shared! They thought our legacy belonged to the world!"

She struck the outside of the door with her walking cane—a sharp, violent *CRACK*.

"I bought you from a trailer park in Scranton, David!" she hissed through the wood. "I gave you an Ivy League education! I gave you tailored suits, luxury apartments, and a name that opens every door on Wall Street! You were nothing! A nameless bastard born to a teenage whore! And you repay me by giving my empire to *this* pathetic little schoolteacher?"

Leah closed her eyes, tears streaming hot down her cheeks.

"Step away from the door, David," Evelyn commanded, returning to her eerie, maternal purr. "Step away and open it. The medical van is waiting at the curb. We will take Leah to St. Jude’s. The doctors will deliver the child safely under my personal supervision. She will sign the surrender of parental rights, and then she can take a very generous settlement and leave the country. You can come home, David. Back to the manor. Where you belong."

"I'd rather burn in hell," David said.

"Then you will die with her," Evelyn replied softly.

"Harris. Take the hinges."
