Chapter 7 - The Bloodline's Secret

"David!" Leah screamed from the top of the stairs.

A sharp, deafening *BANG* echoed from the rear of the house.

The glass of the sliding patio door didn't shatter—Marcus’s laminate film held—but the structural frame buckled under the impact of a hydraulic ram.

Marcus was already moving down the hallway like a shadow, his weapon drawn. "Breach at the rear! Miller, stay with your wife! Don't move from the stairs!"

Two more violent concussions slammed into the back door. The sound of tearing metal and splintering wood screamed over the howling storm. Marcus fired three suppressed rounds through the drywall: *thwip, thwip, thwip.* A muffled grunt of pain answered from the patio, followed by the clatter of a heavy tool dropping onto concrete.

"They aren't trying to arrest us," David whispered, his mind racing through the terrifying geometry of the attack. "They’re using non-lethal suppression. Flashbangs and zip-ties. They want Leah alive. They want to drag her to St. Jude’s."

David sprinted up the stairs, taking them three at a time. He grabbed Leah’s hand, pulling her toward the master bedroom. "Into the closet! The interior closet has no windows!"

"David, look!" Leah pointed toward the bedside table.

Her personal smartphone, which had been plugged into a battery bank, was vibrating violently. The screen displayed a call from an unknown landline with an upstate area code.

"Don't answer it!" David said.

"It’s not your mother," Leah gasped, grabbing the phone with trembling hands. "The caller ID... it says *St. Jude Pediatric Archive*."

She hit speakerphone.

*"Hello? Is this Leah Miller?"* an old, frail voice wheezed over the line, accompanied by the persistent hiss of static and the distant sound of medical monitors.

"Yes! Who is this?" Leah cried.

*"My name is Martha... Martha Higgins. I was the head charge nurse at St. Jude’s neonatal unit in 1992... when David was born,"* the woman rasped, coughing weakly. *"I don't have much time. Evelyn Miller's lawyers paid my pension for thirty years to keep my mouth shut, but I am in hospice care now. I am dying, child. And I cannot meet God with this on my soul."*

David stepped forward, his eyes wide. "Martha? I remember you. You used to visit our house when I was a boy."

*"David... oh, God, David, listen to me,"* the old nurse wept. *"You don't understand what your mother is. You were never Julian's brother."*

David froze. The room seemed to tilt beneath his feet. "What are you talking about?"

*"Julian was not your brother. Julian was Evelyn’s first child with her husband. But you... David, you were adopted from an unwed mother in Pennsylvania after Evelyn’s second pregnancy resulted in a stillbirth."*

David’s breath stopped entirely. The world went dead and white.

*"She hid the adoption,"* Martha continued, her voice trembling with thirty years of buried guilt. *"She forged the birth certificate with Judge Hastings’s help. Because if her husband knew she could no longer bear children, he would have divorced her under the terms of their prenuptial agreement and taken Julian with him. But then... Julian found the adoption papers when he was twelve. He threatened to tell his father."*

Leah gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

*"Julian didn't drown by accident, David,"* Martha sobbed. *"Evelyn held his head under the water of the lake. She held her own son down because he threatened her standing in the family empire. And when your father finally grew suspicious three years later, she began slipping digitalis into his nightly brandy."*

David fell to his knees on the carpet, the shotgun clattering against the floorboards.

His entire life—his memories, his lineage, his pride, his very identity—shattered into millions of jagged pieces. He wasn't a Miller. He was an accessory. A prop purchased to secure a multi-million-dollar inheritance, kept on a leash for thirty-two years by a sociopath who had murdered her own flesh and blood.

*"David,"* Martha whispered, her voice fading into a shallow rattle. *"She doesn't want your child to protect the Miller name. She wants your child because the original trust fund requires a biological heir descending from her late husband’s lineage. David... you aren't biological. If the board discovers your true origin, the entire estate defaults to your father's surviving cousins in Boston. But if you have a child... and she claims you are dead... she can use your forged papers to maintain power for another twenty years."*

*"She doesn't want the baby dead, David,"* Leah breathed, the horrific puzzle pieces suddenly locking into place with devastating clarity. *"The tea... the ergot extract... it wasn't meant to kill the baby. It was meant to induce labor early! She wanted to force me into an emergency premature delivery at St. Jude’s!"*

Before Martha could reply, the line went dead with a high-pitched digital whine.

At that exact moment, a thunderous explosion blew the front door completely off its hinges downstairs.
