Chapter 9 - The Final Severance

Two Treasury agents stepped forward, gently but firmly taking Adrian by the elbows and pulling him up from his knees.
“Adrian Vale, you are not under arrest at this moment, but you are required to surrender your passport and accompany us to the Federal Plaza office for questioning regarding wire fraud and attempted capital flight,” the lead agent said.
Adrian didn't resist. His body was completely limp, his spirit broken beyond repair.
As they led him toward the exit, Vanessa Cole was sitting on a marble bench in the foyer, sobbing into her hands. Her phone was dead. Her silver Bentley was gone. Her designer purse was empty except for a lip gloss and an expired credit card.
When she saw Adrian being escorted out, she jumped up.
“Adrian! What about me? Where am I supposed to go? My apartment lease is under the company name!”
Adrian didn't even look at her. He kept his eyes fixed on the floor, walking past her like she was a piece of trash blowing across the street. The very woman he had kissed thirty minutes ago to humiliate his wife was now utterly invisible to him.
Vanessa turned toward me as I walked into the foyer, flanked by Daniel Vance.
“Mrs. Vale… please,” Vanessa whimpered, falling against the wall. “I have nothing. I didn't know he was using me! He promised me everything!”
I paused and looked at her.
“The apartment on 57th Street will be cleared by noon tomorrow,” I said evenly. “You have twelve hours to gather your personal belongings. Anything left behind will be donated to a women’s shelter.”
“I don't have anywhere to go!” she cried.
“Then I suggest you call your father in Dubai,” I said. “I’m sure he has plenty of advice on how to survive when the house of cards collapses.”
I didn't wait for her answer. I walked past her, out the revolving doors of the Plaza Hotel, and into the crisp midnight air of Fifth Avenue.
Outside, the paparazzi were still gathered behind the police barricades. When the doors opened, three hundred camera flashes exploded in the darkness.
Reporters shouted over the noise of the traffic:
*“Mrs. Ashcroft! Is Vale Meridian facing insolvency?”*
*“Eleanor, did your husband commit wire fraud?”*
*“Are you taking over the company?”*
I didn't hide behind a coat. I didn't put on sunglasses.
I stood at the top of the marble steps beneath the glow of the streetlights, looking straight into the lenses.
Daniel Vance stepped up beside me and raised his hand to quiet the crowd.
“Mrs. Eleanor Ashcroft will make a brief statement,” Daniel announced.
I looked at the cameras. My voice was steady, calm, and carried across the quieted street.
“Vale Meridian Group is fully solvent, fully capitalized, and operating under the direct authority of Ashcroft Holdings,” I said clearly. “Adrian Vale’s association with this organization has been permanently terminated for gross breach of fiduciary duty. Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, I will assume the role of Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer.”
A reporter shouted from the front row: *“Mrs. Ashcroft, what do you have to say to your husband’s supporters who claim he built this company from nothing?”*
I looked directly into the center camera lens, knowing Adrian would see it on the television screen in the holding room at Federal Plaza.

“A building cannot stand without a foundation,” I said, my lips curling into a cold, elegant smile. “Adrian Vale was just the weather on the roof. The storm has passed. The foundation remains.”
