Chapter 6 - The Thirty-Minute Reckoning

The ballroom became a vacuum. You could have heard a diamond pin drop onto the carpet.

Adrian stood frozen, his crystal glass still hovering halfway between his chest and the table. Vanessa stepped back, her hand involuntarily dropping from his sleeve as if he had suddenly caught fire.

“What is this joke?” Adrian hissed, his voice trembling with a toxic mixture of rage and terror. “Daniel, you work for *me*! Vale Meridian pays your firm’s retainer! Get these security guards out of my gala before I ruin your career!”

Daniel Vance didn't even blink. He looked at Adrian the way an exterminator looks at a cockroach on a kitchen floor.

“Vale Meridian does not pay our retainer, Mr. Vale,” Daniel said calmly. “Ashcroft Holdings pays our retainer. And as of 10:02 PM this evening, you are no longer an officer, director, employee, or representative of Vale Meridian Group.”

Celeste jumped up from her chair, her face contorted in fury. Her voice was shrill enough to shatter the crystal flutes on the table. “How dare you! Do you know who my son is? He built this company! Call the hotel manager! Call security! Arrest this lunatic!”

One of the Treasury agents stepped forward, pulling a gold badge from his jacket.

“Ma’am, step back and sit down,” the agent said coldly. “We are executing federal asset preservation orders. Any interference with court-appointed officers will result in your immediate detention.”

Celeste choked on her breath, falling backward into her chair. Her eyes darted toward the high-society women at the next table, who were already whispering behind their silk napkins, their eyes wide with malicious delight.

Marcus stood up, his face red. “This is bullshit! You can’t just kick the CEO out of his own party! Adrian, do something!”

Adrian lunged forward, trying to snatch the envelope from Daniel’s hands. “Show me the voting consent! You can’t pass a board resolution without a seventy-two-hour notice! It’s in the bylaws!”

“It was in the bylaws,” Daniel replied smoothly, opening the envelope and pulling out a sheaf of certified documents. “Until you attempted to initiate an unauthorized wire transfer of two hundred and eighty million dollars to an offshore entity under your mistress’s maiden name at 10:14 PM tonight.”

A collective gasp swept through four hundred guests.

Reporters in the back row began typing frantically on their laptops. The *Wall Street Journal* senior editor at Table Four pulled out his phone and put it to his ear, his eyes locked on Adrian.

“That triggered the emergency malfeasance clause under Schedule B,” Daniel continued, his voice relentless and clear. “Schedule B allows the controlling shareholder—Ashcroft Vanguard Trust—to assume direct executive control without board convening, shareholder vote, or prior notice.”

Adrian’s breath came in ragged gasps. He turned wildly toward the crowd, looking for his allies.

“David! Harold!” Adrian shouted toward two major institutional investors sitting at Table Two. “You know me! You’ve backed me for ten years! Are you going to let this happen?”

David, the managing partner of a twenty-billion-dollar private equity fund, looked down at his watch, then picked up his napkin, wiped his mouth, and stood up.

“Our fund covenants prohibit us from associating with entities under federal asset freezes, Adrian,” David said quietly. “Good luck.”

David walked toward the exit. Harold followed him three seconds later.

Then came the roar from outside the hotel.

Through the massive arched windows overlooking Fifth Avenue, the sounds of hydraulic lifts and heavy vehicle engines rumbled through the glass.

Marcus rushed to the window, pulling back the velvet drape. His jaw dropped.

“Adrian…” Marcus stammered, his voice turning into a high-pitched whine. “Adrian, there are flatbed tow trucks outside! They’re… they’re hooking up the Maybach! They’re loading Vanessa’s Bentley onto a flatbed right now!”

Vanessa shrieked. “My Bentley? That’s *my* car! Adrian bought that for me!”

“Correction, Ms. Cole,” Daniel said, pulling a laminated vehicle registration from the file. “That Bentley Continental GT is owned by Ashcroft Fleet Management LLC. As you are not, and have never been, an employee of Vale Meridian or Ashcroft Holdings, you have been operating a stolen corporate vehicle for fourteen months. Asset recovery officers are securing the vehicle pursuant to Grand Larceny statutes.”

Vanessa looked at Adrian, her eyes wild with panic. “Adrian! You told me it was leased in your name! You told me you owned the fleet!”

May you like

Adrian didn't hear her. He was staring at the doorway, where I was slowly walking back into the ballroom.
