Chapter 8 - The Mexican Collapse

One thousand eight hundred miles away, at the ultra-luxurious, five-star Las Ventanas al Paraíso resort in Cabo San Lucas, the sun was sinking into the Pacific Ocean in a blaze of brilliant orange and magenta.

Diane Vance was reclined on a poolside cabana bed, holding an empty crystal glass. She waved her hand impatiently toward the server.

"Another bottle of Dom Pérignon, young man," she commanded in her loud, piercing voice, ignoring the annoyed glances from other wealthy patrons nearby. "And bring more of those tuna tartare appetizers. Caleb, make sure you put this on the black corporate card. The points from this trip should cover our flights to Aspen for Christmas."

Caleb, sitting nearby with his linen shirt unbuttoned halfway down his chest, was smoking a cigar, scrolling through Instagram where Brooke had just posted a reel of herself clinking glasses on their private yacht charter earlier that afternoon.

The caption read: *Life is what you make it. Blessed with the best family. Hard work pays off! #VanceEmpire #BillionaireMindset #FamilyOverEverything.*

"Don't worry about it, Mom," Caleb said with an easy laugh. "Vance Build Group clears fifty grand a week in gross revenue. A few thousand dollars for champagne is pocket change."

The waiter returned ten minutes later, holding a silver tray with the bill folder, looking slightly uncomfortable.

"Excuse me, Señor Vance," the waiter murmured politely. "We attempted to process the corporate Centurion card for the evening charges and your pending resort deposit. The transaction was declined."

Caleb chuckled, waving his hand dismissively. "It’s a fraud alert, idiot. The bank always flags international charges over ten thousand. Run it again."

"We ran it three times, señor. We also attempted the secondary business Visa. Both cards came back with code 05: Do Not Honor / Account Frozen."

Diane sat upright, her face tightening into an ugly scowl. "What kind of third-rate establishment is this? Do you know who my son is? He’s the premier commercial builder in Virginia! Call your manager immediately!"

"Mom, calm down, I’ll handle it," Caleb said, his face flushing with irritation as several heads turned in their direction. He reached into his designer alligator-skin wallet and pulled out his personal American Express. "Use this one."

Five minutes later, the waiter returned again. This time, the restaurant’s assistant general manager accompanied him.

"Señor Vance, we apologize for the inconvenience, but your personal card has also returned an error. The account appears to have been suspended by the issuing institution. Furthermore, your remaining incidental hold for the master villa has failed to clear. We require a valid, functioning form of payment within one hour, or we will be forced to ask you to vacate the suite."

Brooke gasped, nearly dropping her phone into her drink. "Vacate? Are you insane? Do you know how many followers I have? I will destroy your resort on social media!"

"Quiet, Brooke!" Caleb snapped, cold panic finally piercing through his alcohol-induced bravado.

He pulled out his phone, dialing the direct number for his relationship manager at Southern Commercial Bank. The call went straight to voicemail. He tried logging into the Vance Build Group mobile banking app.

*Error: Access Denied. User credentials have been revoked by the corporate administrator.*

"What the hell?" Caleb muttered, his thumbs flying across the screen. He opened his personal bank account app. The balance read: **$142.18**.

A notification alert flashed on the screen: *Notice of Judicial Attachment / Temporary Restraining Order on Marital and Corporate Assets served by Sterling Trust Legal Counsel.*

Caleb’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. "No. No, no, no..."

He opened his email. There were fifty unread messages, but the top three sent a chill through his soul that froze the humid Mexican air in his lungs:

1. *From: Marcus Hale, Sterling Legal – FORMAL TERMINATION OF MANAGEMENT & REVOCATION OF RESIDENTIAL LICENSE.*

2. *From: Board of Directors, Vance Build Group – Notice of Emergency Removal of Managing Director.*

3. *From: Apex Repossessions – Seizure of Corporate Leased Assets (Porsche Macan).*

"Caleb?" Diane’s voice was high-pitched, shrill, and bordering on panic. "Caleb, what is going on? Pay the man! People are staring!"

Caleb dropped his phone onto the teak table, his face devoid of color, his skin turning a sickly shade of ash gray.

"Claire," he choked out, barely able to find his breath. "Claire froze everything."

"What do you mean she froze everything?!" Diane shrieked, standing up from the daybed, her voice echoing across the quiet, elite pool deck. "That little bitch is eight months pregnant! She’s supposed to be scrubbing my baseboards! Call her! Call her right now and tell her to unfreeze the cards or you’ll divorce her!"

Caleb dialed my number with trembling fingers.

The phone rang once. Then a pre-recorded message played smoothly through the earpiece:

*"The number you are trying to reach has restricted incoming communications from this caller. If you are an authorized party, please contact Hale, Vance & Associates Legal Offices during standard business hours."*

Caleb sank into his chair, the burning cigar slipping from his fingers onto the stone floor.

For the first time in his life, Caleb Vance realized that the woman he thought he had caged had just snapped the lock—and he was the one trapped inside the cell.
