Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

By 3:00 PM on the first day of their vacation, the silence of Sterling Manor was replaced by the precise, clinical movement of a professional eviction crew.

Marcus Hale had hired a licensed bonded moving team consisting of eight men in black polo shirts. They did not touch a single piece of antique furniture, nor did they disturb the silver tea sets, the Persian rugs, or my grandmother’s grand piano.

Their instructions were surgical: remove every single personal item belonging to Caleb Vance, Diane Vance, and Brooke Vance.

Under the watchful eye of Marcus and two uniformed off-duty sheriffs who had been hired to ensure the legal sanctity of the process, the movers went room by room.

Diane’s extravagant wardrobe—hundreds of designer dresses, fur coats, custom shoe racks, and vanity mirrors—was packed into plain, brown cardboard boxes. Brooke’s room, littered with shopping bags from high-end boutiques and half-used perfume bottles, was cleared out within an hour.

In Caleb’s master dressing room, they stripped the closets of his tailored Brioni suits, his collection of luxury watches, his golf clubs, and his monogrammed luggage sets.

Everything was documented. Every box was numbered, barcoded, and cataloged on a legal manifest to prevent any false claims of theft or destruction of property.

Outside in the rear courtyard, two massive commercial moving pods sat idling on hydraulic lifts. The movers stacked the brown boxes neatly inside, sealing the doors with numbered steel padlocks.

"Where are the pods going, Marcus?" I asked, standing on the balcony overlooking the courtyard, sipping warm chamomile tea.

"To a secure, climate-controlled storage facility forty miles outside the county lines," Marcus said, walking up beside me with a clipboard. "I have pre-paid the rental for thirty days in Caleb’s name. I will mail the access key to his attorney once he finds one. After thirty days, if he does not pay the storage fees, the facility will auction the contents according to standard commercial code."

"And the vehicles?"

"The local dealership where Caleb leased the Escalade has already been notified of corporate asset freezes," Marcus replied smoothly. "And as for Brooke’s Porsche Macan—since the lease payments were made through Vance Build Group under fraudulent consulting invoices, our corporate repossession notice was served two hours ago. A flatbed tow truck is currently retrieving the vehicle from the long-term airport parking lot where Brooke left it."

A grim smile touched the corners of my lips. "She won't have a ride when they land."

"None of them will," Marcus agreed.

Meanwhile, inside the corporate offices of Vance Build Group, five miles downtown, the seismic shift was already underway.

Marcus had dispatched his senior litigation associate, accompanied by a court order and a team of independent forensic IT specialists. They had entered the headquarters at precisely 2:00 PM, presented the Board Resolution signed by myself as 68 percent majority shareholder, and immediately escorted the head of human resources and Caleb’s loyalist office manager out of the building.

The corporate locks were changed. The company’s digital servers were disconnected from external remote access, cutting off Caleb’s ability to log into the banking portals or company servers from his phone in Mexico.

An emergency email was blasted to every single employee, project supervisor, and subcontractor:

*Effective immediately, Caleb Vance has been relieved of all executive duties and management responsibilities at Vance Build Group due to corporate restructuring and ongoing forensic review. All existing residential and commercial jobs remain fully funded and operational under the interim direction of Sterling Capital Holdings. Subcontractor payments that have been wrongfully delayed are currently being expedited through trust accounts.*

The workers Caleb had treated like disposable tools were not going to suffer. Their checks would clear on Friday, stamped with the name of the Sterling Trust.

Caleb, on the other hand, was about to discover that when you build an empire out of someone else’s bricks, the real owner can tear down the walls whenever they please.
