Chapter 17 - The Shattered Glass

The air in the room became suffocating. The high beams of the idling Lincoln outside cut through the falling sleet, painting our silhouettes against the walls like actors on a high-stakes stage.
"You're bluffing," Mark hissed, his finger tightening visibly on the trigger of the pistol. "You're trying to save her. You always had that sickening, self-righteous savior complex, Eleanor! You stayed with me for years because you thought you could fix a broken man! Well, look at me! I’m not broken! I’m rich, and I’m leaving!"
"Then shoot," I said simply.
The words hung in the cold air, terrifying in their finality. Chloe let out a muffled whimper, sliding down the pantry frame.
I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I stared straight down the barrel of the gun.
"Shoot me, Mark," I continued, my voice steady, devoid of anger, echoing with the absolute clarity of someone who had already mourned the end of the world months ago. "Add capital murder to federal securities fraud and money laundering. Fire the gun in a house located four miles from the state police barracks, with your registered vehicle idling outside in the driveway. Do it. Prove to everyone that beneath the bespoke suits and the private jets, you’re just the desperate, panicked little boy who couldn't pass the bar on his own merits."
Mark’s chest heaved. The veins in his neck bulged against his starched white collar. His hand was shaking—not with fear, but with the monstrous rage of an ego being stripped naked and exposed.
"You ruined my life," he snarled.
"No," I replied softly. "You built a house out of dry rot and wondered why it collapsed the moment you set a match to the curtains."
Mark raised the gun directly level with my forehead. His knuckles went white.
In that split second, Chloe lunged.
With a scream of feral terror, she hurled a heavy ceramic crock filled with wooden spoons straight at Mark's face. The crock shattered against his temple with a sickening crack.

*BANG.*
The gun went off. The muzzle flash illuminated the room in an explosive burst of blinding white. The bullet tore through the upper kitchen cabinet, obliterating a shelf of bone china, sending shards of porcelain raining down like razor blades across the granite counter.
