Chapter 14 - The Key in the Floorboard

I released Chloe. In the absolute dark of the root cellar, I leaned into her ear, my whisper barely disturbing the dust motes. "Where are the files?"

"In my coat lining," she breathed, shivering against the limestone. "Two encrypted thumb drives. And the physical notary logs Mark kept in his personal safe at the marina slip."

"Why did you come to me?" I demanded, my hand finding her collar. "You slept with my husband for three years in hotels I paid for with loyalty points. You sent messages teasing him about leaving me on Wednesday nights. Why in God's name would you come to my doorstep when your life fell apart?"

Chloe choked back a sob, wiping the drying blood from her temple. "Because you were the only person he was ever truly afraid of!"

The confession hung between us, bitter and startling.

"He never respected me," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking. "He treated me like a trophy he bought with company equity. But you... he used to spend hours reviewing your financial notes before the divorce because he knew you had an archivist's mind. He knew if you ever saw the full balance sheet, you would dismantle him piece by piece. He told me once, when he was drunk, that you were the only predator he had ever lived with."

Above us, the front deadbolt gave a distinct, mechanical *snap*.

The front door creaked open. Mark's leather loafers crossed the threshold onto the reclaimed oak planks. He was inside the house.

I pulled Chloe deeper into the sub-basement, behind the wall of vintage apple crates. My hand reached down behind the third foundation pillar, feeling along the mortar until my fingers hit the cold, serrated edge of a steel pry-bar I had left there during the summer renovations.

"Eleanor," Mark called out, his footsteps moving slowly through the open-concept living room. We heard the glass doors of the dry bar open. The sound of a bourbon decanter being unstoppered. "You always were a creature of habit. You never could leave a problem unsolved. You're listening to me right now, aren't you?"

The liquid poured into a glass.

"Chloe is an idiot," Mark continued, his voice casual, almost conversational. "She thought she was playing chess. She took documents she doesn't even understand. Documents that list *your* social security number on the offshore accounts in Grand Cayman. I didn't set you up, Eleanor. I tried to shield you. But if she hands those drives to the Department of Justice, the shield breaks. Come upstairs. Let's fix this together. Like we used to."
