Chapter 30 - The Man Behind the Glass

The silence in the rotunda was broken only by the rhythmic hum of the cryogenic cooling systems and the heavy thud of Claire’s boots on the metal floor.
Claire raised her rifle, aiming it squarely at the back of the figure's head.
"Step away from the console," Claire commanded, her voice ringing through the vaulted chamber like a steel blade. "Hands behind your head."
Back on Air Force One, Margaret rose to her feet, staring at the screen with wide, disbelieving eyes. "Robert...?" she whispered, her voice breaking. "Is that... is that Robert?"
The figure slowly lowered his hands from the mainframe controls.
He didn't run. He didn't reach for a weapon. He took a long, steady breath, straightened the cuffs of his naval jacket, and turned around.
The man had Robert Hale's jawline, Robert Hale’s dark hair streaked with silver at the temples, and Robert Hale’s cold, steel-gray eyes. But his skin was flawless—unmarked by thirty years of aging, lacking the fine wrinkles and sun-weathered lines that time should have carved into his face.
He looked exactly as he had the night he walked out of Margaret Hale’s life forty years ago.
"You have your mother’s aim, Claire," the man said. His voice was identical to the audio recordings preserved in the Pentagon archives—deep, resonant, and calm. "And you have my patience."
Claire’s finger rested lightly on the trigger. Her heartbeat did not accelerate; her aim did not waver by a millimeter.
"You're not Robert Hale," Claire said coldly. "My father would have died before he allowed an Orion striketeam inside this facility."
The man smiled—a thin, chilling expression devoid of human warmth.
"I am the best of Robert Hale," he replied smoothly. "Project Prometheus. Before your father vanished, he knew the human body was fragile. He knew that one day, an apex commander would be required to execute the final phase of global deterrence. I was grown from his genetic marrow in this very facility, incubated in stasis, waiting for someone with the true biometric keys to unlock the primary command protocol."
Claire’s eyes shifted past him.
Behind the holographic terminal, seated in a reinforced titanium chair inside a sealed glass stasis chamber, was another body.
An old man. Withered, fragile, his hair completely white, his skin papery and pale. He was hooked to dozens of life-support monitors, breathing through an oxygen mask. On his lap rested an ancient, dog-eared photograph of Margaret holding an eight-year-old Claire on the front porch of their colonial home.
The real Robert Hale was alive. Barely clinging to life, trapped behind the reinforced glass, watching through half-closed, weeping eyes as his daughter stood before his creation.
"He held out for thirty-five years, Claire," the clone whispered, stepping to the side of the console. "He refused to give Orion the master authorization code. He let his body rot in that chamber rather than surrender the keys to the orbital strike array."
The clone’s smile widened, revealing a cold, triumphant gleam.
"He wouldn't give us the codes. But he didn't have to. Because you brought the master titanium decryptor drive right into this room. The moment your team breached the secondary airlock, the Vault’s proximity sensors scanned your uniform, your biometrics, and the drive in your pocket."
A loud, piercing klaxon began to howl throughout the rotunda.
On the main holographic display, the satellite map flashed crimson. A massive progress bar illuminated in glowing red text:
*BIOMETRIC MATCH CONFIRMED: GENERAL CLAIRE HALE (187).*
*ORBITAL DEFENSE PLATFORM OVERRIDE: ACTIVATED.*
*TARGETING PROTOCOL INITIATED: GLOBAL REVENUE SERVERS / ALL ALLIED CAPITALS.*
*COUNTDOWN TO IMPACT: 180 SECONDS.*
"Thank you, Claire," the clone whispered, pulling an encrypted detonator from his breast pocket. "You brought us the key. Now watch the world burn."
The old man behind the glass slammed his frail, trembling hand against the quartz window, mouthing a single word Claire could read through the reflection:
May you like
*RUN.*
The blast doors behind Claire slammed shut with a deafening metallic thud, trapping her inside the dying heart of the Mariana Trench.
