Chapter 25 - The President's War Room

Three hours later, the world changed forever.

A Boeing E-4B Nightwatch—the Pentagon’s airborne nuclear command post, known colloquially as the "Doomsday Plane"—cruised at 42,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean.

Inside the pressurized, lead-shielded conference cabin, the tension was thick enough to choke on. Screens lined the bulkheads, displaying live satellite telemetry, thermal oceanographic feeds, and real-time alerts from the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Margaret Hale sat in a secure VIP jump-seat at the edge of the cabin, holding Lily close to her chest. She had been wrapped in a fleece military blanket, sipping tea brought to her by a Navy lieutenant commander who addressed Margaret with the utmost deference: *"Mrs. Hale, can I get you anything? It is an honor to have you aboard."*

Margaret looked around the room, bewildered. The highest-ranking military officers in the United States were gathered here. Four-star generals, admirals with ribbons covering their chests, intelligence directors—men who decided the fate of continents.

Then, the blast-proof door hissed open.

Claire walked into the war room.

She had shed her civilian clothes. She was now dressed in the sterile, unmarked charcoal-black tactical flight uniform of Task Force 187, bearing only two insignias: the golden trident crossed with the Roman numeral *CLXXXVII* on her chest, and four subdued silver stars on her collar.

Every single four-star admiral, general, and cabinet official snapped to attention.

The sound of heels clicking together echoed through the metal cabin. General Vance, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, raised his hand in a rigid, razor-sharp salute.

"General Hale on deck," Vance barked.

Margaret stared, her breath catching. Her daughter—the woman she had told to "get a respectable job," the woman she had mocked for living in a modest cabin—commanded the total, unquestioned reverence of the United States armed forces.

President Sterling stepped forward from the central holographic display table. "Report, General."

Claire inserted the titanium drive she had extracted from Robert’s attic into the central console. The main holographic screen flickered, instantly rendering a massive three-dimensional topographical map of the Mariana Trench.

At a depth of 35,800 feet, nestled in a seismic fissure, was a colossal structure resembling an underwater fortress: The Acheron Vault.

"The drive contains the acoustic decryptor keys," Claire announced, her voice cutting through the hum of the aircraft’s avionics. "My father anticipated that if Orion ever tracked the Vault's coordinates, they would attempt to force the airlocks using deep-sea thermal plasma cutters. But the Vault has a self-destruct failsafe. If unauthorized entry is attempted without the dual biometric pulse, thirty megatons of cobalt-salted warheads will detonate."

The room went dead silent.

"A detonation at that depth," Admiral Vance said, his face draining of color, "would trigger an unprecedented mega-tsunami across the entire Pacific Rim. Japan, Hawaii, California, Australia... millions would die within three hours."

"Which is why Orion isn't using plasma cutters," Claire said, pointing to a flashing red telemetry icon near the fissure. "The distress signal sent thirty minutes ago used my father’s personal cipher. They didn't breach the vault by force. They brought someone down there who has his biometric profile."

Margaret leaned forward, her voice trembling. "Claire... are you saying your father is still alive down there?"

Claire looked at the display, her eyes grim. "Or they cloned his genetic signature from Cold War naval records. Either way, Orion is forty-five minutes away from unlocking the main mainframe. Once inside, they gain control of the global satellite encryption keys."

President Sterling leaned across the table, his face etched with absolute determination. "General Hale, Task Force 187 is officially reactivated under Presidential Directive Omega. The USS *Titan* is in position above the trench. You have full command authority over all Seventh Fleet assets. Stop Orion. Secure the Vault."

Claire snapped a crisp, effortless salute. "Consider it done, Mr. President."
