Chapter 7 - The Secret Inside the Sapphire

We arrived at a discreet, high-security safety deposit vault in lower Manhattan as twilight fell. The rain was coming down in sheets, washing the grime of the city into the storm drains.

Henderson waited in the idling car with a snub-nosed revolver on his lap, while Eleanor guided me through the armored doors of the vault facility.

"Box 408," Eleanor told the night manager, sliding an authorized power-of-attorney card across the desk.

Minutes later, we sat in a private, windowless viewing room. A heavy steel box was placed before us. Eleanor opened it with a master key.

Inside lay a single, velvet-lined jeweler’s magnifying glass, a micro-screwdriver, and a sealed letter addressed to *My Son*.

My hands shook as I unfolded the yellowed stationery.

*“My sweet boy,”* the letter read in my mother's neat script. *“If you are reading this, I am gone, and Arthur has found you. Do not trust Mark. He orchestrated the accident that killed my mother, and he tried to orchestrate mine. The sapphire you wear unscrews counter-clockwise at the bezel. Inside is a micro-SD chip. It holds the port records, the wire transfers, and the video footage from the harbor warehouse on June 12th. Take it to the federal prosecutor. Reclaim our family. Love, Mom.”*

Tears hit the paper, smudging the ink.

I took off the ring. Using the tiny screwdriver, I pressed the hidden pin beneath the silver band. With a soft, mechanical *click*, the top half of the ring detached.

Nestled inside the hollow platinum mount was an ultra-thin, black micro-SD card, completely sealed in waterproof silicone.

"My God," Eleanor breathed, her eyes shining with triumph. "She actually did it. This is enough to put Mark Vance in federal prison for life."

Suddenly, the lights in the viewing room flickered and died.

An emergency red strobe began to flash, casting eerie crimson shadows across the steel walls. The heavy magnetic locks on the reinforced vault door buzzed loudly, and the heavy door slowly swung open.

Standing in the red glare was Mark Vance, accompanied by three men in black tactical gear carrying silenced semi-automatic pistols.

"Thank you for doing the digging for me, Eleanor," Mark sneered, stepping into the room. "Now, hand over the chip."
