Chapter 5 - Poison in the Silver Chalice

By sunrise, the story had broken across the nation.

*“LOST HEIR OF THE VANCE BILLIONS DISCOVERED IN MANHATTAN GALA.”*

Reporters lined the perimeter gates like vultures. Television vans stretched down the winding Greenwich lane for half a mile. Inside, Arthur was a transformed man. He had canceled his morning chemotherapy, demanded a fresh suit, and called his corporate attorneys to draft an emergency codicil to his will.

"Everything," Arthur told his lead attorney, Eleanor Cross, as they sat in the library at noon. "The shipping fleets, the real estate trusts, the voting shares. Caroline was my sole heir. Her boy inherits her complete 60% stake."

"Arthur, please," Eleanor cautioned, adjusting her horn-rimmed glasses. "Mark has been managing operations for a decade. The board will revolt if you cut him out overnight. They could challenge the boy's mental competence, file for conservatorship, drag this through probate for ten years."

"Then let them try," Arthur growled. "Mark has been siphoning funds. I didn't want to believe it, but the audits I ordered last week don't lie. He's bleeding Vance Logistics dry."

While they argued, a maid brought in a silver tray carrying Arthur's afternoon tea—a dark, fragrant Earl Grey steeped in an antique silver teapot.

"Drink your tea, grandfather," I said, sitting beside him on the sofa. "You look pale."

Arthur smiled warmly, patting my hand. "A good boy. Just like your mother, always fretting over me."

He lifted the silver cup to his lips, took two long sips, and set it down.

Within three minutes, Arthur’s hand began to twitch.

I watched in horror as the teacup shattered against the marble floor, splashing brown liquid across his trousers. Arthur grabbed his throat, his face turning an alarming shade of mottled purple. His eyes bulged, and a strangled, wet wheeze tore out of his chest.

"Grandfather!" I screamed, lunging forward.

"Arthur!" Eleanor yelled, dropping her legal pads and rushing to his side.

Arthur collapsed sideways off the sofa, his body convulsing in violent seizures. White foam began to bubble at the corners of his mouth.

The library doors burst open. Mark Vance strode in, followed by two paramedics who had conveniently been waiting downstairs.

"What happened?!" Mark shouted with theatrical panic. "Uncle Arthur!"

"He drank the tea!" Eleanor cried. "He can't breathe!"

Mark knelt beside Arthur, but instead of checking his pulse, his eyes snapped to the maid's cart, then directly to me.

"The boy was the last one near that tray," Mark shouted loud enough for every staff member in the hall to hear. "I saw him hovering over it before Eleanor arrived! He poisoned him to trigger the inheritance!"

"What?!" I shrieked, backing away. "I didn't! He’s lying!"

"Security!" Mark roared, his eyes blazing with murderous triumph. "Detain this impostor! Call the homicide division!"
